Recently I saw a post on a friend’s timeline that mentioned a company roasting coffee here in South Africa. After doing some digging, I realised that I knew two of the owners and knew that I immediately had to find out more.
This time in isolation has made me realise the importance of supporting local, and I have spent quite a bit of time researching businesses that are making a difference, producing amazing products/services, and those that more of the public need to be aware of. Being stuck indoors for almost 2 weeks (let’s be honest – none of us really know what day it is, or even what time it may be) means that at home we have been experimenting with much cooking, baking, and MANY cups of coffee. So I was thrilled to receive my bags of 3 Lads and a Toucan today and it has made my day so much brighter.
Your name: Kobi van Schalkwyk, Barend van Schalkwyk and Charl Mcleod
Tell me a bit more about what you do: We supply specialty grade Coffee beans and ground coffee that we source directly from origin and roast locally in SA. We are based in Durban and are a proudly South African business.
What makes your coffee so different to others: We only use specialty coffee beans. This means that you are always going to get a beautiful clean cup of coffee with incredible flavours and taste. We certainly are not the only guys using specialty beans but quality is something that we will never compromise.
Where did the passion for this come from: From my perspective – Running our own business has always been a passion of ours and the idea of supplying a great quality coffee from Brazil actually started from school days when I was privileged enough to attend a Scottish school for 3 months on an exchange program . Long story short – one of my best mates in the Scottish school was a Brazilian chap and we started speaking about a potential business between the two countries 15 years ago! I also have the privilege of running this business with my best mate and my brother which makes it even more epic! Oh and we are all addicted to coffee!
How did you decide on your name: It a funny story which is pretty much summarised in a poem on the back of our coffee packs but to give you the plain version : We travelled to Brazil a few times, always in search of a Beautiful Toucan. We never found it BUT on our second to last trip we were travelling through a big coffee farm where our Brazilian friends were giving us a run down of how coffee is processed. Whilst we were driving, this Beautiful Toucan shot past us, it actually almost flew into our windscreen … the car screeched to a sudden halt and we all jumped out , very relieved that we didn’t hit the toucan. From that day onwards we knew that Coffee was the game we were meant to be in. It did after all give us our precious Toucan!
Where can people purchase your coffee from: Our coffee can be purchased from selected Spar Stores. Spar is an awesome company and brand to do business with and we love their local, caring approach. If we aren’t in the Spar store near you – nudge the store manager in our direction please! Our coffee is also available directly from us by getting in touch with us on firstname.lastname@example.org or through a DM on Instagram.
Who do you think would enjoy your coffee: Our coffee is made for everyone. You don’t have to be a coffee snob to enjoy our blend – its really easy drinking and delicious… Even if we say so ourselves.
Why do you encourage people to support local: Local businesses are the lifeblood and backbone of many communities. Especially in these difficult times that we live in. We have also realised how dependent SME’s are on people taking a “Local is Lekker” Approach. One can often also see what impact supporting local businesses has on those businesses owners and the people that they employ- which is a big drive for us to support local.
Quote you live by: “We want to do a lot of stuff; we’re not in good shape. We didn’t get a good night’s sleep. We’re a little depressed. Coffee Solves all these problems in one delightful cup.” – Jerry Seinfeld
Anything else you want to add: Thank you for having us on your blog. We feel honoured – you are an inspiration to so many out there.
As I am writing this, I have a steaming cup of this delicious coffee next to me. The aroma alone has my taste buds going. You can purchase the coffee in either bean or ground form, and it is well worth trying it out. If you have even a slight fancy for good coffee, then I guarantee that you will not be disappointed!
Does your local Spar keep stock of this? Or will you be placing an order for it instead? They can deliver during lockdown (thankfully coffee is on the essentials list!) so you don’t even need to wait until the end of the 21 days to try some yourself.
Recently I was invited to an event at KCC La Vie En Rose (see their Facebook & Instagram pages) for a Bloggers Brunch, & I immediately accepted! In case you haven’t noticed, I absolutely love my food, & brunch is that in between meal that just makes me super happy. With husband working Saturdays we don’t often get the chance to go out & experience new restaurants, so this was really special.
I arrived early on Saturday morning at Killarney Country Club, & drove through to the restaurant – it is on the property of KCC, & past where the gym is so don’t feel like you are getting lost! I was immediately greeted by the friendliest staff, along with a glass of mimosa before I headed to the table of bloggers that were already seated & snapping pics of the gorgeous surroundings.
What a great group of people I got to meet! From foodies, to tech babes, to YouTubers, to lifestyle bloggers – we were all there & I am so grateful for the friendliness & acceptance in the circle of Joburg “influencers”. But, I digress…
We were treated to a table groaning under the weight of the lavish spread laid out for us. From Nutella stuffed pancakes, to bagels with salmon, cream cheese & avocado – there was literally something for everyone. My sweet tooth was in heaven & I couldn’t resist trying a little of everything, including the cannelloni which made the sounds around me fade into the background & my entire attention zoned in on what was entering my mouth.
My plate was filled to the brim, & I managed to scrape it clean before ordering a Chai Latte, which was the perfect ending to the most perfect morning. The entire experience left me with a huge smile & desperate for any excuse to go back. I rolled out of the restaurant to my car & immediately called my husband to say that we needed to make a plan to go back together (*cough cough* wedding anniversary?)
All in all, I have to say that I rate the entire experience a 10/10. The ambience, food & drinks were all outstanding – the only problem I have is that there was no more room in my belly to try everything that was there. It was such an honour to be invited to this event, & I will definitely be back as soon as possible.
La Via En Rose caters for events such as baby/bridal showers, birthdays & get-togethers. You can request to be seated in the beautiful garden under umbrellas, or enjoy a cozy meal inside their restaurant with your loved ones.
Contact them today for your next morning out by calling 011 268 6144 or email email@example.com. And ENJOY!
My health journey has introduced me to many new businesses that really get me excited. I have a terrible sweet tooth, & definitely eat my emotions. ie if I’m feeling happy/sad/excited/depressed/nervous/stressed/any other emotion, I will reach for food. And preferably something sweet, laden with sugar & filled with empty calories. I have been consciously trying to make a change, & one thing I am focused on is only having healthy snacks at home & at the office. It doesn’t always work, but every small step is still a step forward in the right direction.
Grumpy Snacks is a small business that make me laugh out loud when I spotted their social media posts, & I really loved their whole vibe. The owners are easy to talk to, willing to chat & passionate about what they are offering. I am sure you will be as obsessed as I am once you learn more about them!
Tell me a bit more about your business: I am hungry. ALWAYS hungry. In the blink of an eye hungry becomes grumpy. And then no one is safe, especially Tim (my partner). Snacks are the reason our relationship has survived (and why I still have any friends). But the ready-to-eat healthier alternatives are hard to find. This is why Grumpy Snacks was born and why we’ve dedicated ourselves to mastering the art of chickpea roasting. This little legume packs a nutritional punch, and we spent months in our kitchen perfecting the crunch. Our chickpeas are dry roasted. Afterwards they are coated in ethically sourced milk chocolate from Cocoafair OR a small fraction of coconut oil and spices are added to them. We use only natural ingredients and each step has been developed to ensure maximum nutrition is available for absorption. This one’s for the snackers of South Africa. We hope it makes you a little less grumpy too.
What are the health benefits of chickpeas: Healthy source of plant protein and they are high in fibre
Where did your business name come from: We know many people out there who become pretty grumpy when they’re hungry (much like me)! We started Grumpy Snacks cause we wanted to offer a better-for-you snack option to stop the grump!
When will they be launching: Our sea salt dry-roasted chickpeas are currently available in packaging-free form in Nude Foods in Zonnebloem and Nude Foods in Newlands (both Cape Town). Our packaged sea salt and milk chocolate dry-roasted chickpeas are due to be available in select Wellness Warehouse stores countrywide in Feb 2020.
What makes your snacks different to others available in supermarkets: We have strived to seek a balance between achieving delicious taste and preserving nutritional value. In doing so, we have created a better-for-you snack that is really enjoyable, yet doesn’t leave you with that regretful feeling junk food so often does!
Do you have a secret ingredient: Not a secret ingredient per se (we are very transparent about all the ingredients we use cause we believe people should understand exactly what is going into their bodies). But we certainly a secret process that helps arrive at the perfect crunch while preserving as many of the nutrients as possible.
Quote you live by: Bring snacks. Always!
Oh my word you guys – how delicious do these sound? My tummy is literally grumbling just reading through their responses… I adore roasted chickpeas & these just sound like they have created the perfect product.
Let me know in the comments if you have tried them yet! I want your feedback please.
During my quest to health in 2019, I discovered this local business called “Umoya Foods”. I saw how people I admire in the health industry were making use of their products, & I was drawn to their social media presence as well as their offerings. I have realised that our foods these days are not providing the nutrients & goodness that our grandparents could get from simply eating naturally, & it is so important that we supplement. I currently add protein powder & collagen daily, as well as micro-greens & -reds.
And taking into consideration that our bodies need a little bit more TLC than we are currently giving them, Umoya Foods can provide just that!
Tell me a bit more about your products: Umoya Foods is a startup that creates nutritionally valuable products using African Ingredients. Our current focus is amaranth and we have two ranges based on the plant; nutrient boosts and instant amaranth cereals.
Our nutrient boosts are based on amaranth leaf powder which is also known as wild african spinach and is part of the Morogo family. Amaranth leaf is incredibly rich in micronutrients including manganese, magnesium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and iron to name a few. What amaranth does is give you a wholefoods source of micronutrients and helps to increase bioavailability of other nutrients to your body so that you can absorb more nutrients from the foods you are already consuming. The four nutrient boost flavours can be added to smoothies, green juices, breakfast and your everyday meals.
Each mix does have a specific profile: Vital Green: 100% amaranth leaf powder. Great for green juices and adding to pestos, over eggs or even in biscuits to get greens into otherwise green-less meals. A great mix to get your kick of micronutrients. Chocolate Glorious: With cocoa, coconut, chia seeds and hemp seed protein powder this mix is a wonder at curbing those chocolate cravings while giving your body some great fats and proteins! Feisty Baobab Spring: A zingy mix of baobab, ginger and amaranth, Feisty, as we fondly call it is a wonderful post workout mix. Baobab is high in fiber and vitamin C while ginger is a natural anti inflammatory. This mix not only supports your immune system but also replaces electrolytes you lose after working out and helps muscle recovery. A tablespoon blended with apple and avocado is super simple and one of my favourite mixes ever! Turmeric Zen Shine: With Madagascar vanilla bean powder and ground almonds, this is a delicate tasting mix designed to soften the strong taste of turmeric that people aren’t always looking for. Turmeric is an amazing anti inflammatory and antioxidant, and on top of that is known to support brain function which is why it is our ‘recommended’ afternoon pick-me-up! This mix tastes divine in your morning oats or afternoon turmeric latte!
The instant amaranth cereals were launched on the 31st of August and have been thriving ever since! They are based on the amaranth grain which is in fact a seed making it gluten free, naturally high in protein and micronutrient dense. Amaranth grain is one of the ancient grains and is similar to quinoa. We have popped and roasted the grain to create the base of our two cereal flavours; Thrive Cacao and Thrive Baobab. We also added hemp seed powder to both. What we wanted to achieve is an instant cereal that is high quality, free from refined sugars and filled with wonderful interesting and nutritious ingredients! Thrive Cacao: With raw cacao, raw beetroot, cranberries and cacao nibs we think of this as an antioxidant fix which is super textured and turns purple when you add a liquid! Raw cacao is known to be an upper that gives you a kick of mental energy while raw beetroot is known to have detoxing properties. There is no sweetener or sugar in this mix as all the sweetness comes from the cranberries and raw beetroot! Each bite is different with some being rich and chocolatey while others are tangy and sweet with some crunch making for a fun meal! Thrive Baobab: A splendid blend of baobab, cinnamon and ground macadamia nuts! This is our high energy essential fatty acids food fix which will remind you of lemon cinnamon pancakes. Macadamia nuts are high in monounsaturated fatty acids which are often lacking in western diets and also known to help lower cholesterol. Baobab tastes like lemon sherbet and is specifically high in soluble fibre which acts as a prebiotic therefore feeding your gut microbes while cinnamon is known to help maintain blood sugar levels. The addition of a touch of xylitols gives some sweetness to the mix but if this is not enough then it should be noted that Thrive Baobab and honey is a heavenly combination!
What makes them unique in comparison to other products: Our reason for existence is to support small scale farmers and we have structured ourselves to work directly with growers wherever we can. Our amaranth leaf is grown by a small scale farmer and solar dried on farm using a solar drier that we have designed. This allows the farmer sell to us at premium.
Our amaranth grain and raw beetroot powder is supplied by the Siyazisiza Trust who support over 800 small scale farmers across the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal.
As amaranth is climate appropriate, drought resistant and nutritious, it is valuable all the way from crop stability to food security. These are the long term goals that we are attempting to address.
Simply put, what makes us different is that our products are unique, as there are no other amaranth based products like ours on the market, and our focus on increasing small farmer income at scale drives all our actions.
Where possible we source our other ingredients locally too, although this will grow as we grow and our buying power increases.
What is your personal favourite product: My personal favourite has to be the Thrive Baobab. It is easy, comforting and loaded with micronutrients because of the baobab. And it is so convenient. I often forget about breakfast until 5 minutes before I leave the house, Baobab Thrive takes 30 seconds make and makes be feel like I’m taking care of myself.
My colleague on the other hand is a massive fan of our Feisty mix, she adds it to a smoothie of apple, cucumber and water. Clearly there’s something about that Baobab lemonyness that makes us happy.
What are your most popular products from the public:
On the nutrient boost side it’s an easy tie between our Feisty Baobab Spring and Turmeric Zen Shine. People love how they contrast and often get both! If you have a lot going on then the zing from the ginger and baobab of Feisty is a winner. On the other hand subtler and calmer pick-me-up flavours of the Turmeric Zen are super easy to add to a whole lot of foods like curries, warm milk, oats etc. which I think appeals to people who like being able to use what they buy in different ways.
Why do you encourage people to follow a plant-based diet: I would honestly have to say it depends on the person, the lifestyle and the intent. We are not nutritionists, just people who do a lot of research so prescribing anything is not our thing. What we do encourage people to do is emphasise wholefoods and minimal processing. There’s a lot that is lost by processing and we are aware of that which is what has guided our ingredient choices. Everybody needs treats and meals-on-the-go but getting in all the nutrients your body needs along with that is vital and a VARIETY of wholefoods are the way to get nutrients in easily!
Where did the idea for this business come from: My colleague was researching ways of processing for Amaranth leaf with small-scale farmers in mind. We started exploring how we could sell it to the food ingredient market but then we realised there was no commercial demand for it. So we decided to create a retail brand. These products would need education because although amaranth leaf is traditionally eaten it is known by a variety of other names (morogo, imfino, tepe etc.) and it was not widely commercially available. So we created a range of premium retail products that would bring us the most direct engagement with our market and allows us to start spreading the word. The result of that was the Nutrient Boost range.
Where can people purchase your products from: We are stocked in many of the health food outlets in Johannesburg and you can see a list of our stockists on our website. We are also stocked in some health food outlets in Durban and aiming for the Cape Town market next year. What we say to people who discover us but can’t find our stock in their favourite store is that they should email us the name and we will get on it. They should also make a request to the store owners or managers for our products because that always gets the process moving along a lot quicker. We’re a small team so any retailer nudges are always appreciated!
We are also available on Takealot, search Umoya Foods.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Anything else you want to add: I think the last thing that we would like the world to know is that we are constantly striving for sustainability. Our inner packaging is compostable and while this is not yet biodegradable first prize, it is a step in the right direction while we wait for accessible biodegradable packaging to hit the SA market. Our outer tubes are recyclable and reusable and what we wanted to do was create packaging that could serve multiple purposes because of its elegance. Finally, through our business we always try to emphasise transparency. To offer this to customers we have a QR code on all of our packaging which can be scanned to see what we are about, who our suppliers are and why we exist.
I love these ease of use of these products, & that they are so proudly South African. Plus they are actively making a difference in the lives of people wanting to get healthy, as well as all of those involved in the farming & production of Umoya Foods.
I am placing my order for these now, & know that I am going to chat to my local health shop to ask them to start stocking them in 2020!
I love nothing better than a soft squishy brownie, that literally releases a volcano of flavour as you bite into it. I whipped some up yesterday afternoon & cooked them in two different ways – in muffin tins as individual brownies, & then in a cake tin to cut triangular ones. The different tins allowed for different baking times, so the ones we baked for a shorter time so they were yummy & gooey in the centre, & the others were more cripsy & firm.
The Best Chocolate Brownies Ever
Mix in one bowl:
1 1/2 cups sifted Flour
1/2 cup Cocoa
2 cups Sugar
chopped Pecan Nuts OR Lindt balls (optional)
In another bowl mix & beat:
1 cup Oil
1/2 cup Water
7.5ml Vanilla Essence
Add the wet mixture to the dry mixture, & put it in a greased shallow bowl or as cupcakes.
Set the oven to 170°C, & bake for approximately 17 minutes. The secret is to watch them baking & take them out as soon as the outside is done, leaving the the centre soft & moist. You may have to try this several times to get it exactly right, as all ovens differ.
You can also make some icing, or add cream/ice-cream, or sprinkle icing sugar on top to make them even more decadent.
We (i.e. husband & myself) finished half of the brownies before we left for our New Year’s Eve celebrations – they are even better when they are warm & gooey, but there is no harm in trying to save some for the next day.
I am not a huge drinker, & thus when I came across this great product where you can buy glasses of wine that are sealed & easily able to transport to festivals/picnics & so on; I did a little happy dance. I can enjoy a glass of wine on a hot Summer’s evening without the rest of the bottle going to waste.
They have great customer service, & to be honest, I was so intrigued when I saw the ChocoVino too!
Tell me a bit more about your business: Product info:
It is quality wine already packaged in a handy 187ml PET (recyclable plastic) glass, which is all about convenience and “ready to go”. This product is perfect for all outdoor events, concerts and conferences, as it is not glass and therefore safe for the public.
The positive points are:
Easy and convenient with a peel-off lid!
Accessible: no pouring necessary and no wastage of open bottles of wine.
Ideal for picnics, braai’s, pool parties, mini bars, camping, game lodges, sports events, concerts, conferences, stadiums & other outdoor events.
The wine has a shelf life of at least 12 months and need not be stored in the refrigerator.
Safe & unbreakable: Most outdoor venues don’t allow glass onto their premises, so this is the perfect product as there is no danger of broken glass.
Earth friendly: fully recyclable PET plastic.
Non-toxic plastic, i.e. BPA free.
Where did the idea for this business come from: The concept originated in the UK. The product was in fact featured on the Dragon’s Den where it was turned down as a bad idea. When the program eventually aired on BBC, Marks & Spencer saw it and decided to list. Today M&S do around 1.5m glasses per annum selling at £2.99. It was therefore one of those concepts that slipped through the Dragon’s Dens net.
Where can people buy these from: Various Spars, Tops and Food Lovers Markets around the country. Also online at www.glassofwine.co.za
What does your range comprise of: The product is branded as “Single Serve” and the range comprises of:
Dry White: Chenin Blanc
Dry Red: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon
Rosé: Semi-sweet Rosé – Mainly Chenin Blanc with a touch of Pinotage for colour.

All the wines come from De Wet Cellars, situated in Worcester. Our state of the art filling machine is based next door at Breedevalley Bottling Company.
Quote you live by: “Those who say they can and those who say they can’t are both usually right.”
“If you’re the smartest person in the room, then you’re in the wrong room.”
In my opinion these are PERFECT for New Year’s Eve, & any events where you don’t want to lug around a whole bottle of wine, or want to look a little more sophisticated drinking out of an actual wine glass.
The best part of it is that they are 100% recyclable & I can’t wait to try them all out. Warren is most excited about the Merlot, whilst I am more of a fan of Rosé. Please let me know if you have tried them yet & what you think!
I was given this recipe from a family member following a Christmas dinner, & whenever I have made it since it has been a huge hit! Yesterday we had our Christmas lunch with our friends, & it reminded me again of how popular & yummy it is – so I knew I had to share it with you. Perhaps you could even make it for your next family celebration?

5 tsp Butter
1/4 cup Cold Water

Sift dry ingredients.

While the pie is baking, mix all the sauce ingredients together & cook in microwave a little bit at a time until thick.
Once the pie is cooked, pour the sauce over the top.

This can be served as a main with your meat & veggies, but also enjoyed as a dessert with cream on top.
I am sure that you will love it! Please tag me in your pics when you try it yourself.
I have really seen the benefits of going “natural” with some of my treatments, & this includes the food & drinks that I put into my body. I am trying to drink more water, & less tea & coffee. However, when I saw these gorgeous teas at Jozi Girl Eatery, I wanted to find out more about them. What made them so special? And what do they actually help with?
Tell me a bit more about your business: I offer unique teas to support women’s health
Where did the idea for these come about: I am a huge tea lover! When I was approached by a company to do this I immediately took the opportunity.
What are the different flavours & their uses: There are two teas, a moon time tea and a sleepy dream time tea. They both have the base ingredient to support hormones but the moon time tea supports our cycle and the sleepy dream time tea assists with relaxing and sleeping.
What makes your tea different from those we can buy at mainstream shops: This unique loose leaf tea isn’t like anything instore, the moon time tea is a soft pink colour and the sleepy time tea is blue. The beautiful design and packaging can also be upcycled.
Where can people buy your tea from: The Jozi Girl Eatery and Leafy Greens Cafe, online stores coming soon!
Why do you encourage women to drink this tea: This tea has so many hormone-balancing benefits, it assists with cramps, PMS as well as mood and energy levels.
Quote you live by: Magical blends for magical beings
These really are delicious teas, & you can feel a difference whilst drinking them so you can see the results for yourself. And with such beautiful packaging, how can you resist?
Lorna has her own blog over at Jozi Girls Eats – give her a follow for more brilliant health hacks & recipes.
This time last year I had my fundraiser, The Snow Ball, to raise funds for my life-saving stem cell transplant. I was blown away at the generosity of everyone that I knew, as well as those that I had never met. Liezl was one of those very special people that didn’t even know me, yet sponsored the most gorgeous (& delicious) snowflake biscuits for everyone that attended my event. The biscuits didn’t even make it home as they were all gobbled up at the event!
Then, my friend Jenny spoilt us all at Rare with a box of Christmas-themed cookies, & as soon as I saw them I knew that I had to reach out to Liezl & feature her on my blog. Besides looking absolutely amazing, they are the most yummy biscuits you will ever taste. Read on to find out more about this beautiful lady & her biccy business.
Tell me a bit more about your business: I have been a freelance Graphic Designer since 2013, but having always loved parties and baking and after being encouraged by friends (and my first cookie “order”) I decided to start my party planning business, Sugar & Paper. I call myself “a celebration enthusiast” – I can conceptualise, design, coordinate and style your event, and even bake the tasty treats. A one-stop-shop of good taste!
Where did your passion for baking come from: I have always loved baking and the rule in our house growing up was “you make the mess, you clean it”. So my sister and I baked often! Baking is a productive form of self-expression and communication. It’s also a form of mindfulness and altruism – at the heart of baking for others is the very act of giving. And, although, people pay me for my cookies, it will never cover the amount of time and love I pour into every baked creation.
How did you learn all the amazing royal icing techniques: I have actually never taken a cookie class – I learned through trial and error. Lots of error! Also, YouTube and social media are great places to watch tutorials etc.
What makes your cookies different to those you can get in the shops: My cookies are made with quality ingredients, real butter, free range eggs and lots of love! I think my attention to detail sets me apart.
What are some of the events you make cookies for: I make cookies for birthday parties, bridal and baby showers, corporate events – anything really! Even just to fill your cookie jar at home.
Whereabouts are you based: I am in Linmeyer, Johannebsurg South.
How far in advance should people place an order with you: The sooner the better, as I book up fast! Ideally, I need confirmation and full payment 2 weeks before collection.
Do you sell Christmas cookies, & do you have extra in stock: I haven’t taken Christmas pre-orders as yet this year but have just posted some!
What have been your favourite cookies that you have made so far: It’s so difficult to choose! I love just about every set I send out as it’s a part of my creativity 🙂
Why do you encourage people to support small businesses: I encourage people to support small business because you are helping someone live their dream! Handmade items are always more expensive than store bought, but that’s because they are bespoke – that item that’s handmade, has been created from precious time that was spent designing, searching for materials, creating the product, finishing, packaging, cleaning! It’s also hours of failures, experimentation, frustrations, and moments of pure joy. It’s a piece of their soul, their heart and a moment of someone’s life!
Quote you live by: Don’t sweat the small stuff 😉
Anything else you want to add:
I hope to build Sugar & Paper into a brand that people will immediately think of when it comes to parties. Right now, I seemed to have slid more into the cookie side of my talents, but hope that I will be able to become ever more involved in the design side too.
Aren’t her creations absolutely stunning?
I could spend hours getting lost in Liezl’s images on her social media pages, & can definitely vouch that these cookies taste just as good as they look.
Ok I need to go now, my mouth is watering & I my tummy is grumbling. Liezl I’m coming for you!
Recently my husband & I began a healthy eating & lifestyle plan, & when I realised just how expensive this was going to be, I literally shuddered. I am having to go to the shops every second or third day to buy fresh fruit & veggies, & these often go vrot before we get a chance to finish them all. I knew there had to be an easier way of doing this. I feel like the big supermarkets often mark up their fresh produce excessively, & these often seem to be at the end of their shelf life too – which means they have a very short life span.
And then, I heard about this amazing company called Veg Out through one of my Facebook groups. Casey will fill a crate with fresh fruit & veggies, & deliver this right to your door! I immediately contacted her, & placed an order with her for the 2 of us. She makes her deliveries every Monday for the week, & I waited in anticipation for our crate of happiness.
I was not disappointed. It was jam-packed with fruit & veggies that we enjoy, as well as a beautiful bunch of flowers to brighten my home. I had also ordered some of her homemade bread which went down an absolute treat! Casey asks if there is anything that you don’t eat/enjoy (no brussel sprouts for me thanks!) & thus you are guaranteed to be able to whip up a healthy, tasty meal with everything she provides. This beautiful lady deserves all the support possible & I can’t wait for you to learn more about her & her business.
How can people get hold of you: firstname.lastname@example.org or on 0826813436
Tell me a bit more about what you do: I started this fruit and veg delivery service to supply great quality produce at prices far below the grocery store price point. I’m passionate about experiencing new foods. trying new recipes and living outside the classic meat & potato meal. Produce gets delivered in crates and is plastic free; with berries and such rather in brown paper bags. I want to be locally responsible, sustainably sourced and reduce my customers overall footprint by minimising their travel and plastic consumption.
Where did the passion for healthy eating come from: having kids; wanting to live longer to know them longer; and give them that better start and relationship with food.
Where do you deliver these crates to: JHB North area; within 5km of Lonehill is free and R25 per 5 km further afield. So R75 for 20km from my house etc.
What are the additional things you do: Peanut butter in glass jars made by a good friend, homemade rusks by my friends mom, homemade bread and natural health bars, so far.
What is the cost of your crates of goodies: 1-2 people is R225 for 7 veg and 4 fruit (x enough for 2 people) and 3-4 is R350. Coming soon I have braai, brunch, juicing and introducing-baby-to-solids boxes.
What is your personal favourite fruit & veg: I love spinach; I have since I used to eat it out the garden as a kid. And strawberries for the win.
Please share your favourite healthy recipe with us: Definitely this one but I add in patty pans and marrows for maximum veg goodness. Even my kids polish it off.
