I was given this recipe from a family member following a Christmas dinner, & whenever I have made it since it has been a huge hit! Yesterday we had our Christmas lunch with our friends, & it reminded me again of how popular & yummy it is – so I knew I had to share it with you. Perhaps you could even make it for your next family celebration?
1 cup Sugar
1 cup Cake Flour
2 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Ginger
Pinch of Salt
1 cup Cream
100g melted Butter
2 cups cooked, mashed Butternut/Pumpkin
5 tsp Butter
1/4 cup Cold Water
1 cup Brown Sugar
3/4 cup Milk
2 Tbl Maizena Corn Flour
Set oven to 160°C.
Sift dry ingredients.
In a separate bowl; mix the eggs, cream & butter. Add the butternut & mix.
Add the dry ingredients & mix.
Place the mixture into a greased oven dish & bake for 2 hours.
While the pie is baking, mix all the sauce ingredients together & cook in microwave a little bit at a time until thick.
Once the pie is cooked, pour the sauce over the top.
Place back in the over for roughly 10 minutes until the sauce has soaked in & the pie is baked through.
This can be served as a main with your meat & veggies, but also enjoyed as a dessert with cream on top.

Aromatherapy, or essential oil therapy, refers to a range of traditional, alternative or complementary therapies that use essential oils and other aromatic plant compounds.
I am always looking for natural products to use on my skin, & when my nails began peeling from the chemotherapy I was on the hunt for a cuticle oil that would moisturise my nails & surrounding skin, & help protect my poor nails from any further damage.
So when I began my deep, dark dive into the interweb for a locally produced product, I was immediately pointed in the direction of African Secret. I reached out, & told her my concerns, as well as what I was looking for. I let her know how super sensitive my skin has become, as well as my medical conditions. She asked if I would give her some time to research my condition & see if there are any essential oils that are recommended for my concern, or even contra-indicated.
Immediately I was impressed as she wasn’t just trying to hard sell me her staple products, but was really listening to my concerns & wanted to help me feel better & not suffer in pain any more! And when the goodies arrived, I was so excited to try them out. No reactions, & as soon as I opened the box that they arrived I could smell all the gorgeous oils. So now, let’s find out a little more about this beautiful business…
Tell me a bit more about what you do: I am the founder of African Secret. Our products help relieve common ailments and contact dermatitis using natural ingredients. We make a range of aromatherapy blends and our washes are suitable for use from head to toe, are biodegradable and hypo-allergenic.
Why did you decide to start this business: My interest in personal care products began when I was an agent selling products for a popular skincare company – their products were good, but they contained parfum & artificial colour. After the birth of my son, something sparked and it was my mission to research and develop products which incorporated natural ingredients, without adding fragrance and colour (the main cause of contact dermatitis and skin irritation) as sensitive skin and contact dermatitis is increasing at an alarmingly rapid rate.
Have you always had an interest in aromatherapy: My interest in aromatherapy started a few years ago – when I turned to essential oils instead of pharmaceuticals for relief.
What is your most popular product: Our Tea Tree Cream is the go-to product when anyone in your family has an insect bite, rash, flare-up, sunburn, itch, burn, scrape or graze from outdoor activities/sport.
Do you do special blends for specific needs: We are constantly researching and developing new blends, so we encourage our clients to let us know what they would like solutions to.
Where can people order products from: Email firstname.lastname@example.org or WhatsApp 0824771227 – request our pricelist and place your order.
View our products on our Facebook Shop and inbox us or email your order.
What is the importance of using natural skincare: Natural products do not contain artificial irritants or drugs that could do more harm in the long run.
Why do you encourage people to support local: When people purchase locally-made products instead of commercial products (majority mass-produced outside of SA) they enable us to provide quality products made-with-love, and, they help us do what we love – which is helping and satisfying our customers.

I absolutely adore all my products from Stacey-Jane, & will definitely be ordering more. The cuticle oil is in my handbag to apply whenever I remember; the body wash has been hidden from husband so he doesn’t finish it all (he loves it & goes through it at a rapid rate!); & the tea tree cream was an absolute lifesaver when the mozzies were out in full force.
Please always be careful when using essential oils – it is not a good idea to simply buy these off the shelf, especially if you have pre-existing conditions such as epilepsy or sensitive skin, or are pregnant. But SJ knows her stuff & you will be completely safe in her hands. She has a sports massage oil which I definitely have my eye on – I have been attempting to gym & my poor muscles are crying in pain! What are you super keen to try?
I will never recommend a product unless I have tried it myself, & have actually seen benefits of using it. My skin used to be something I really took pride in, & skincare has always been vital to me. Whilst studying Beauty Therapy I came to realise the importance of our decisions now & the effect that they will have on our skin for years to come. A good product is so important, but so is finding the product that works best for YOUR skin.
A friend of mine has started this business, THC – The Hemp Cream & after stalking her page for a while, I knew I had to try it out for myself. We were going to an event with Rare Diseases SA so I quickly contacted Melissa & asked for one of her sample kits to try for a week.
The foot repair gel has such a variety of uses – including for cold sores, cracked heels, insect bites & so much more. I even used it to moisturise my lips & the tingle was wonderful! This is a product that I personally feel should be in every first aid kit.
Both the day & night creams are MAGICAL for anti-ageing, inflammation, pigmentation, loose saggy skin, eczema and more. The night cream is thicker (as it should be) & the fragrance of both of these is just divine. My skin feels a whole lot softer & I also used these on my scars at the same time to find these have healed a whole lot quicker & I haven’t developed keloids. The photos below show the difference in just 7 days – the only change I made to my skincare routine was adding these products from THC!
I also had a growth burnt off my finger when I had my port inserted, & it was just not healing. It is right on the tip of my finger (& extends under my nail) & every time I bumped it, it felt like a jolt of electricity went through my body. So I thought I would try apply the foot repair balm & these are the results in a week:

Ultimately, I only have positive things to say about these products. My skin looks & feels so much better; it has healed a lot quicker than normal; & I love the idea that there are more natural ingredients! I had a quick little chat to Melissa to find out more…
Your name: Melissa Botha
Your business name: The Hemp Cream
When did you start: December 2017
What did you do before this: Running Raising Aidan where I manufacture and distribute a microwave cupcake mix. (Still running that)
How/why did it start: I needed a change mostly… I run it to support myself obviously, but mainly to support my special needs son Aidan who has Costello Syndrome. His medical and related costs each month average R35 000.
What do you love most about having your own business: The freedom it offers me to be a mom to a special needs child. I can take time off when I choose to, I can be there for all of Aidan’s challenges.
What have been some of your biggest battles with running your own business: Running your business is not an overnight study. I’ve been learning since 1998 how to run a business and gained most of my knowledge during the early 2000’s when I successfully hit leadership within Herbalife. Back then it was learning how to attract customers and keep them. Now my biggest challenges are being able to attract customers and keep them with ever changing technology. Also… upscaling a business is what I’m currently working on so I can have more reach and more growth.
What is your main objective for your business: To give me the ultimate freedom – financial freedom to pay bills… AND then to be able to travel at the drop of a hat as often as I’d like to without the worry of losing income if I’m away, and having enough money to do so.
