Catch Me!

You should set goals beyond your reach so you always have something to live for.
– Ted Turner

Life post-transplant has certainly been interesting!

I have learnt a lot about myself, as well as others.  I have seen where my priorities truly lie, as well as those that would give everything to see me healthy once again.

I have seen family rally, & friends disappear (as well as the other way around…)

But mostly, this year has been about LIVING.  It has been about trying new things, getting out of my comfort zone, meeting new people & constantly living the best life I possibly can.

This past weekend was a perfect example of such an activity – along with questioning my stupidity & capabilites…

The greater danger for most of us isn’t that our aim is too high and miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.
– Michelangelo

I signed up for my first ever trail run through Catch Me If You Can.  I had heard of them through some of my fitness pals I have made, & thought it was a good excuse to try them out whilst improving my fitness & getting out in nature.

Catch Me If You Can (CMIYC) is South Africa’s largest all women running community that connects ladies of all ages, shapes and sizes. They’ve helped thousands of women connect and build lasting friendships whilst improving their health, fitness levels and lifestyles.

The CMIYC Leaders are phenomenal women with a common goal to encourage women of all fitness levels to join a community where they will feel comfortable and celebrated for who they are! They run all over South Africa, giving you the opportunity to discover the most beautiful routes and races in your area. They offer safety in numbers and a chance to get out and have some fun!

From beginner to Comrades Marathon – start your journey with them. Their diverse team of CMIYC Leaders will support you all the way! Their weekly activities include running, walking, hiking, and trail running.

They believe that running is about so much more than putting one foot in front of the other – they know that running will change your life.

They’ve put their everything into building the 1st Women Running App just for us and know we will love it!

I arrived at Rietvlei Zoo Farm nervous for what I was about to do.  They had 5km, 10km & 15km options – & of course I had gone for the biggest challenge.  I was filled with trepidation & all the comments from the nay-sayers were playing through my mind.

“You will never manage.”

“Do you know how far 15km is?”

“I’m fit & I wouldn’t even manage that distance.”

“You’re being stupid.”

“You’ll never make it.”

67442719_493909911394087_2959228498394218496_n

And then I remembered all the encouragement I received too…

“Your mind is strong Megs.”

“You make me so proud.”

“Do what you can.”

“Just enjoy it.”

“Think of how far you have come!”

“You can do it.”

With renewed passion I went to register & received my pink band that I put around my wrist. I saw some ladies I had met previously, went over to say hi & then prepared for the adventure ahead…

(note to self…  Serious trail runners do not carry water bottles.  They have those fancy-pants backpacks with water, or nothing.  Do not be that kippy that takes your own & then has to hide it somewhere at the start to collect once the race is finished.  You’re welcome.)

When the race started, I felt butterflies in my tummy & an excitement that I have not felt in years.  I was actually doing this.  Last year I was walking with a cane & now I was taking on a literal mountain.  I took a deep breath & started putting one foot in front of another…  Every step for the Rare Disease patients who can’t.  Every step squashing the negativity & hurt that I have been carrying for way too long.

Yes, there was pain.

Yes, there were moments of wanting to give up.

But, there was also so much laughter.  So much fun.  So many friendships.

Namaste

“the divine in me bows to the divine in you.”

My journey with Yoga has been an interesting one.  I have always been interested in Yoga, & see many of my friends posting about the different poses & the benefits it has has on them physically & emotionally.  I understand how the different flows & general relaxation of Yoga can allow stress to melt away; & how it helps your mind & body to get stronger.

When I attended my first ever Yoga class at the gym, I was frustrated with how little I could actually do & felt self-conscious about this fact.  I felt so stiff & the movements felt unnatural – it wasn’t helped by the fact that the instructor kept calling me out & telling me I wasn’t trying hard enough.  I left feeling defeated & was even more confused as to why people loved this practice…

65196049_469472410504504_6112795247501115392_n

And then I attended an external class at a birthday event hosted by Hoko.  The emotional release was almost instant, & I found tears spring to my eyes.  I tried a few classes on this day, & it reminded me of the importance of finding a Yoga instructor that has a passion for what they are doing, & simply finding a flow that works for YOU.  I left feeling so relaxed & had such respect for all the Yogis out there.  I also knew this was something I wanted to continue with!

And now I am constantly on the hunt for more goodies that will improve my Yoga experience – & when Yogle was one of the pages recommended for me to follow I was super excited!

Tell me a little more about what you do:
Having a background in start-up technology marketing, being a keen entrepreneur as well as a self proclaimed fitness addict, it seemed the appropriate time to launch my latest venture- Yogle, which is a complementary combination of the three. Yogle is a yoga towel brand (for now), bringing life to workouts through colour. Launched only in May 2019, it is a vision I am so excited has finally come to life and is now the centre and focus of my every day. Along with the community who have backed this venture from the start, I have had so much fun managing the creative looks of the towels and overseeing the manufacturing to ensure the highest quality materials are being used. Day to day, we are constantly seeking partnerships or collaborations in the industry, supporting those around us and bringing our clients only the best. Local is most certainly always lekker, and we are keen to get our teeth stuck in to what we believe is a very exciting road ahead.

Why do you encourage people to try yoga & adopt this into their lives?
Oh my gosh, where to start? Yoga not only has physical benefits, including improved
posture, strength building and better blood flow, but anyone who has practiced yoga has felt the mental benefits as well – Feeling a deeper sense of clarity, tranquillity, calmness (due to the breathing techniques it uses) and that feeling of absolute bliss.
For me personally, I like the challenges, both physical and mental that Yoga brings me.

I myself am not an amazing Yogi.
I went to my first Yoga class about a year ago and like most people, found that it generated an unforgettable feeling. It felt to me like all the stress of corporate life and small issues that seemed so big had just disappeared. Yoga was not easy and did not come naturally to me – This is what I loved so much about it. There is no ceiling to reach. There is something new to learn in every class, in every flow and something new to feel in every pose. No class is ever the same and every individual takes something different from the journey. Some feel physical benefits, some emotional and others it is an opportunity to switch off from the world and focus on themselves. You do not need to be good at yoga to feel these emotions and in fact, regardless of where you are, whether beginner or expert, there is still always a new milestone for you to reach or a new pose that you are working towards. It is an ever evolving workout with the world to learn. The accomplishment of finally hitting the pose you have been working so hard on, for months, is what does it for me personally.

Where did this idea come from?  The more I did Yoga, the more determined I got to be stronger and the more fascinated I became with the industry. I began to try various products and brands, trying to find the right mat, the right towel and the right equipment. Most of the yoga towels I did find were not great quality which causes you to slip off the towel and loose concentration. All the good quality towels I did find, would cost me an arm and a leg. There are some beautiful towels out there, and with the passion I had found for the industry, I wanted to be involved. With that, came my brightly coloured yoga towels which became known as Yogles. I can’t wait for what
is to come, but until then, I am having the time of my life.

67309014_430986347493102_6645141115102035968_n

What makes your yoga towels so special:   In one word: Quality. On top of that, our Yoga Towels are brightly coloured and have very vivid patterns on them. This has been done to welcome the emotions that colour brings to us throughout our everyday lives. We want our towels to stand out and bring energy, vibrancy and positivity to a room. They are exceptionally high quality microfiber with non slip silicone dots which will grip into the yoga mat underneath and prevent you from slipping during your practice. They can be popped into the washing machine no problem which is a real win, particularly after a hot yoga session.

67402280_429472300977840_4028155646875533312_n

Why a towel rather than a mat:  Our Yogle towels go hand in hand with any Yoga mat. Our towels dimensions are 61cm X 183cm which allows them to cover the mat
entirely. Many yoga fans are finding that the mat alone is not sufficient in grip due to the sweaty surface that it becomes; leaving you slipping and sliding during your workout. Having a towel to grip into the mat and prevent this is essential when performing
yoga, so that you can focus on holding your poses and building the strength without worrying. A yoga towel is also more hygienic, as the moisture is absorbed into the towel (rather than the mat) which is then thrown into the washing machine, ridding it from
all the oils from your skin, dead cells and sweat. It becomes the hygienic barrier between you and the mat you use. A towel is also essential if you do not own your own mat and are relying on using the studio mats – Do you really know where they have been?

Where can people buy these from:  We are retailing online at the moment, and we ship for free across South Africa.

Quote you live by:  “Don’t over think it”

Anything else you would like to add:  We are always looking for Yogi’s to do shoots with. We are also keen to do marketing collaborations, supporting one another’s brands and growing an even bigger community. In order for our quality to be felt, we are looking to stock in various studios across the country. For any further info or collaboration opportunities, please feel free to reach out.

I have my eye on the Fornax Yogle – especially when I see this is described as the most fiercely coloured & vibrant of them all…

I attended International Yoga Day a while back with some friends.  I got to spend some time purely on myself, tried new Yoga flows, & left feeling utterly relaxed.  With the stress that every day life is throwing at me, I often feel like I am simply functioning on adrenaline & absolutely dread the day that this runs out!

While I was at this event, I got to spend a little time walking around the stalls that were there & see more of what is on offer in the fitness/wellness industry.  One such stall was Black Strawberry Activewear…

I was attracted to them from their bright colours & the friendly face of Londeka who was working there.  I knew I had to go over to take a look, & spent a good amount of time inspecting what they had on offer.  With beautiful African-inspired prints, amazing quality fabric & beautifully designed activewear; I was suitably impressed.  I went home & did some more research on them before reaching out & asking if I could do a blog on them.  This clothing is made with the South African woman in mind – it embraces our curves & individuality.

66285127_477415043043574_6446180809563963392_n

Their customer service is out of this world, & they immediately responded.  They even sent me the stunning set I had been eyeing out at International Yoga Day, which showed me that they truly care about their customers & pay attention to their interests.  When I put it on I felt like a modern-day superwoman & loved how soft the top & tights felt against my skin.  Plus another bonus is the TWO hidden pockets in the tights – if you know anything about me, you know I love a good pocket!  These would be perfect for an iPod, some cash, or some lady necessities.  I even got a “WOW” from husband when I walked out in it which obviously boosted my self-confidence.

Without further ado, here is the interview with the creator herself!

How long have you been running for: Two years

What makes your clothing different to others: We want to celebrate Africa, in all its awesomeness. We try to have designs that celebrate different African cultures, the vibrant colours, art and way of life. We love highwaist leggings that accentuate a woman’s waist and pockets that makes sure that we can carry lipstick or race food or tissues and our phones wherever we workout.

Why are you so passionate about what you do: Mainly because it doesn’t feel like work; it’s fun, exciting and adventurous. My team and I get to discover that there is inspiration everywhere if we only have our eyes and hearts really open to it.

Why would you encourage people to support local: We think it’s important to support local brands as they’re like family; wouldn’t we all like to support our family members who are creating something that they are passionate about? Local brands also motivate us ‘cos they make us believe that it’s possible for all of us to achieve something from just an idea as long as we’re prepared to do the work.

Where can people buy your clothing from: Online and at pop-ups – we normally apply at different events (running races, health and wellness expos etc) and depending on the cost, we pop-up there.

Why are you passionate about living a healthy, happy life: WOW, where do I start; a healthy lifestyle helps me keep fit, full of energy, unstoppable, lets me explore different sports and live an adventurous life. I’m also more aware of what I eat and the effect it has on my mood, my body and my life as a whole.

Quote you live by: I don’t have one quote but have five statements I keep on my bathroom wall (so I can revisit them everytime I brush my teeth)

(1) I am capable of learning and developing

(2) I can put effort into improving myself

(3) Challenges are opportunities to grow

(4) Feedback helps me to improve

(5) Failure gives me an opportunity to try again and do better

You guys!  Are you not just completely enamored by this company & everything that they stand for?  And don’t you love that they EMBRACE our bodies for what they are, rather than trying to force us to fit into society’s mold of ‘perfection’?

I would pick a size up from your regular, as they are quite tight fitting & you don’t want to be uncomfortable in your gorgeous new outfit!  They also have some great inspiration tees available – my friend bought some & they are also a gorgeous quality, & so so stunning.  I think we all need a reminder to be fearless, & perhaps there are other ladies out there that need to hear this too!

A while back I met the most wonderful person, & I was instantly drawn to her kindness & zest for life.  Over time I have been lucky enough to see more of her, & spend time with her & see why people are so attracted to being around her.  Izzy is a “celebrity” yet so down to earth & caring.  She has had advice for me throughout my journey to health, & always has a little positive message for me.  Next month (eeek!) we are actually doing a trail run together to raise funds for Rare Diseases SA, as well as prove to ourselves what we are capable of doing.  If you would like to follow this journey, you can follow us here.

Tell me a bit more about yourself: I am a simple girl who is just too passionate about the health and fitness industry. Just trying to change peoples lives, with one lifestyle tip at a time.

How did you get into fitness: After studying health coaching, I found it was the next best step. Plus I wanted to learn how to really train properly.

Why do you think taking care of your health is so important:  Without health we have nothing, I know as I have been there. There is nothing as painful as not having your health, or loved ones not having their health. We have this one body to live our lives with, we better make that quality of better if we can!

48378283_1087333481441550_7938801014302310400_n

I know you do online coaching, can you tell me a bit more about this: I have slowly started advertising challenges and one on one training online. I coach groups or one on one and am really focusing on growing into weekly group coaching sessions where ladies can sit together around their computers and chat in a live chat room about their concerns and help each other out. I can sit back and give a coaches perspective but sometimes we just need human interaction to help motivate us and give us clearer vision of where we are going.

If someone wants to make a change with their health, what would you recommend for them? Reach out to an expert! Even myself as a coach have used coaches in my life. There is so much contradicting information out there, that if you just have that one person you can rely on weekly it can launch your lifestyle further.

What are some gym products you simply can’t live without? (eg fitbands etc) Haha definitely fitbands! They make such a difference to lower body workouts. I also love my BCAAs, I call it my liquid motivation.

Quote you live by: Everything is always happening for my greatest good.

61913613_1195601933948037_896880405100101632_n

Anything else you want to add: I try to live in gratitude as much as I can. Life isn’t easy, circumstances can throw you off where you thought you should be but without gratitude you will lose your mind.

Isn’t she gorgeous?  And doesn’t she inspire you to be the best she can be?

Izzy, thank you for being you.  Thank you for bringing so much joy to us.  Thank you for your love & enthusiasm for life.  And thank you for allowing me to interview you.  I can’t wait for our time away in the bush xx

To the woman at the Gym

About 2 months ago I plucked up the courage to join a gym.

I haven’t exercised in over 15 years, & my body has taken huge strain.  Having Myasthenia Gravis meant that I couldn’t exercise, as stimulation of the muscles meant that they were weaker overall & it could even affect my lungs & breathing.  Well-meaning people would say I need to get fitter, or lift weights in order to try strengthen my muscles, but it just isn’t possible with MG.  It is a very frustrating situation to be in, as we all know the importance of exercise as well as the associated endorphins.

But now, with my second chance at life causing me to jump out of bed every morning & be excited to see what I can do today, I knew that I needed to lose weight in a healthy manner & start caring for my body the way it deserves.

Starting at a gym terrified me.  There are super fit people there & I was so nervous that I would be judged for the way I look, my inabilities & just because I am the newbie.  But I put on my big girl panties & headed to Virgin Active Cedar Square – it is close to both home & work, & I immediately got a good vibe from the staff when I walked in.  They were welcoming, kind & made me feel so comfortable.

WhatsApp Image 2019-06-21 at 14.32.32.jpeg

I had no idea what to do on any of the machines, so decided to ease into this journey by trying out some classes.  There were so many to choose from – dancing, boxing, yoga, pilates, The Grid, spinning…  How would I know what I would actually like?  And would I stand out like a sore thumb in the class?

First up was boxing…  Oh boy!  I huffed, puffed, groaned, grunted, sweated & wanted to cry – that was just trying to fit into my tights in order to get to gym.  I didn’t have proper takkies, & had to wear a t-shirt I had been sleeping is as I literally had no active wear.  I didn’t want to spend unnecessary money if I didn’t enjoy this fitness journey, plus my goal is to lose weight so I didn’t think it was worth buying clothes that would (hopefully) be too big for me.

alexander-mils-1568292-unsplash.jpg

Arriving at the gym, I swiped my card & made my way to the room in which the class was to be held.  There were a few other women there & I looked around nervously.  Not one of them greeted me.  They acted like I didn’t exist.  Running around the room as part of the warm-up, I had to keep taking breaks & sips of my water.  I explained to the instructor that I was very unfit & hadn’t exercised in some time – he was so understanding & spent extra time helping me with every exercise to ensure I was doing it correctly to prevent further injury.  But I was put off by the eye-rolling & judgement coming from some of the women in the class.  They made me feel self-conscious & embarrassed.  I couldn’t wait for the class to be over & ran out at the end before jumping into my car & letting a few tears escape down my cheek. What was I doing?  I wasn’t ready for this.

The following week I decided to try dance class.  I had done competitive dance before I was diagnosed, & had always enjoyed moving to music – it brought me so much happiness & transported me to a better place.

As I walked into the room, I saw the same woman that had been at boxing.  My heart sank.  But she ignored me & acted like she hadn’t seen me.  Perhaps she didn’t remember how terrible I was, or maybe she was just so caught up in her own world?

Dance class was everything I could possibly dream of & more.  The instructor was so full of life & made me feel so welcome.  She was beautiful inside & out, & didn’t pick me out in front of the others for not knowing the movements.  She laughed & I left feeling on top of the world.

danielle-cerullo-642332-unsplash

This first class was over 2 months ago, & I have been going on a weekly basis.  It is my pure escape & something that I look forward to every week.  I love the feel-good vibes.  I am still catching up to the others that have been going for ages, but when I look back on the fact that I was walking with a cane this time last year I am FLIPPING PROUD.

But this woman & her cronies…  Gosh.  She is literally destroying my enjoyment & happiness, & I even skipped dance class this week as I couldn’t handle having to deal with her.  I feel like I am back at high school, & there are the “cool kids” in the corner of the class room who are judging me.  I feel like I will never fit in, or really be good enough.  I hide away in the corner, & always stand at the back of the class so nobody will see me.  The enjoyment of the class is totally destroyed by the fact that I feel like I don’t fit in & that they are judging me.

This past weekend I took my sister to gym with me as they had an open weekend.  She commented on how friendly all the staff were, & we both love the fact that they know me by name & make everyone feel so welcome.

WhatsApp Image 2019-06-21 at 14.32.32.jpeg

And then, can you believe it, THE woman came to the same class I had signed my sister & I up for.  Now, I am not your usual lady at the gym.  I still don’t have much hair.  I wear crazy tights.  I laugh out loud when I can’t do something.  But yet this one still acts like she has never seen me.  I was standing at the entrance when she walked in, & offered a nervous smile.  She looked at me & immediately looked away – pretending she had never seen me.  Weird right?

Then helping the instructor set up the equipment for the class, we were standing next to each other.  I thought I would try again – my mum has instilled good manners in me & has always encouraged me to be friendly.  I greeted her.  She looked at me like I was poop on her shoes & walked away.  My sister noticed this interaction & reminded me to be the bigger person.  I think if she hadn’t been there with me I would have immediately walked out & probably shed a few tears on the way.

It took a lot of guts to join a gym.  I know I am overweight.  I know I am unfit.  I know that there is a LOT of stuff that I cannot do.  I don’t have a workout buddy that I can go to gym with, & have had to step out of my shell to make friends at the gym.

There are some wonderful ladies at the gym that greet, encourage & support one another – but there seems to be this nasty little clique that cuts through to your core & reminds you that you will never really be good enough.

I don’t know if I will go back to dance class.  It really upsets me, but I just can’t deal with being made to feel small, insignificant & not good enough by other women who are there.  I am better than I was this time last week – better than this time last month – & a whole new person compared to who I was this time last year.  But I will still never measure up to anything compared to the “cool kids”.

My personal trainer, Zander, is one in a million & really encourages me on a daily basis.  He shows me I can be strong.  He shows me I can be a fighter.  But then I walk into a class with the mean girls & I lose all of that.  I lose myself.  I become that little nerd from school who didn’t fit in & my insecurities are front & centre.

60661269_10161599120460570_9135084693413167104_n.jpg

I just want to remind everyone that you have no idea of the battle that people are fighting.  You don’t know what is going on at home.  You don’t know what medication they are on that has caused them to gain weight.  You don’t know if they had an accident & haven’t been able to exercise in some time.  You don’t know what they are feeling.  You don’t know if your smile could brighten their day.  You don’t know if your snotty, judgmental look could completely ruin it.

It costs you nothing to be kind.  It takes nothing to be kind & welcoming.  But it can be the turning point in someone’s life.

So if you are this woman, please #ChooseKind.  Please don’t make others feel like they will never measure up to you.  Please just smile at me & others like me.  At the end of the day we are all people & we deserve mutual respect & love.

Peace x

Tell me a bit more about what you do: I own and run an online store. I’m the founder of Fit Bands by Fit Farm Girl, the first of their kind in SA material resistance bands: which don’t slip, snap or roll.

How did you come up with this idea: I was an online nutritional coach, working out from home. I wanted to start selling small pieces of equipment for use at home when I came across material resistance bands. No one else in SA was doing it and I jumped on it to create ‘Fit Bands by Fit Farm Girl’ which has now developed into almost 10 different items under the Fit Farm Girl Brand!

thumbnail_IMG_0399

What is a fit band: A Fit Band is made out of a woven fabric blend which is sewn to create a loop resistance band. The Fit Bands are used to activate the glutes – especially helpful for those at a desk all day and incorporated into various exercises to work the lower body

How long have you been running (business-wise) for: May 2019 we are officially 1 years old!

How did you decide on your business’s name: When I was doing online coaching I was living on a Game Farm and working out from home. It came time to decide on a name and I wanted to make it descriptive for me, and so Fit Farm Girl happened. When I moved to e-commerce it made sense to keep the name and let that reputation already created work in my favour.

I see you have introduced more products recently – can you tell me a bit more about those: We have recently launched an active wear range – I have always LOVED fashion and this new range allows me to join two passions of mine! Besides for the Fit Bands and active wear, we also have THRUST pads, Core Sliders, Ankle bands (Fit Bands V2.0) and Kick Straps. And we are also venturing into events with our mind.booty.soul pop-up experience on the 25th May in JHB

What is your favourite fitband: I love the Pink and Purple bands as they were my first and have a special place for me. Also the Signature Series which are custom print bands we release now and then for a limited number, once they sold, the print is never repeated – it takes me months to decide on the right prints, haha.

Why do these make such a difference to your workout: Many people are sedentary and even when they do go to gym, their glutes have become so lazy, they aren’t fully engaged and activated. Using a Fit Band ensures that glute activation. They are also unlike conventional resistance bands which snap and wear quickly. Our bands can be washed and do not snap, ever! Their size also makes them perfect for travel workouts 😉

Where can people order these from: Our website makes for easy check out

Anything else you want to add: I absolutely love owning my own business but it is also the most challenging thing I have faced in my life. Make sure you chose to do something you LOVE and you’re 100% passionate about because then it will be worth it. NEVER just do it for the money, not even money can make you less miserable if you don’t love what you do. Start with what you have and don’t expect it to be perfect. Everything will fall into place, but without action there can be no progress. Take action, take risks and get used to being uncomfortable!

I am so excited about this company, & have ordered my very own sliders, as well as a tote bag – & can’t wait for my very own Fit Band this weekend at their event!  Luckily it has just been my birthday so I will be able to treat myself to some more of their products too…

Will I see you there?  I really hope so!

Hoko Active Wear

2019 has been my year of getting healthy.  I had a stem cell transplant in January & SURVIVED!  I really feel like I have been given a second chance at life & am taking every opportunity to live my life in the best way possible.  I want to be healthy.  I want to be strong.  I want to make good choices.  And this has all started with joining a gym & trying out different classes.

One that has been absolutely amazing is yoga.  I had never even attempted a class before, but had seen how friends rave about it & how it has changed their lives for the better.  It is more than simply an hour-long class, but rather a life-changing way of thinking & living.

Because I have not exercised properly in 15 years (shocking thought I know…) I did not own ANY gym wear & was simply wearing my regular tights & oversized tees.  I know there is nothing wrong with that, but I wanted something pretty that would encourage me to attend gym more often as well as bringing a smile to my face.  And then, I discovered Hoko Active Wear & I was immediately drawn in!

Tell me a bit more about what you do: We have a passion to supply the most comfy and beautiful active wear and leggings at an affordable price.

How did the business idea come about: My mother-in-law and I love to shop! So about two years ago we decided to make our passion our living and launched our little fashion business. Back then we focused on a wide variety of fashion items (our name even started off as FOMO Fashion) but we soon realised how popular our leggings were and decided to focus our energy into the active wear side!

Tell me about Lets Get Twisted: Let’s Get Twisted is our 2nd Birthday Celebration. We wanted to have a day were people could come and celebrate with us and be active and healthy at the same time. So we have created an event that is suitable for the entire family – where you can come and shop, do a yoga class, have a drink or a meal or both ;), have a massage and spend time with your loved ones! It is at the beautiful Modderfontein Bird and Sculpture Park venue and will be an awesome fit day out.

What got you interested in yoga: I have always been interested in fitness – I competed in 2012 and 2013, but I was never fully satisfied with just weight training. Since I can remember I have always wanted to get more into my yoga – but have only recently made the effort to practice regularly, and I will never look back! I absolutely love yoga and its benefits (not only physically but mentally too). I have found it to help in all areas of my life and I cant imagine my life without it now!

Why is fitness & health so important: I honestly have always felt that every single person should take their physical health seriously. Not only to look good but to feel good – and to ensure that your body ages better and your health is your priority. You cant buy health but you can invest in it 🙂

What makes your tights different to others: Ask anyone who has bought a pair (and many more after that) and they will tell you – the fabric! It is super soft and comfy – it almost feels like you aren’t wearing any pants at all. But also the huge variety of patterns – we have something for everyone – and we make sure that we keep new styles coming in all the time so that our customers never get bored.

I see you have ambassadors – that is awesome! How did you choose who to select: At the end of every year we have an ambassador search – any one can enter but we look for ladies who are energetic, positive and who are passionate about our brand.

Which are your personal favourite styles: Ooooh that’s a hard one – I probably have about 20 – 30 pairs! But my all time favourites would have to be: The original “Aztec Round Ombre”, The Favourite “Light Circles” and then I’m a high-waisted junkie – I love all of mine especially “Pink Ombre Leaves”, “Mushrooms”, “Pink Tropics” and “Aztec Dark Purple

Quote you live by: It’s not a quote per say but I live by the word Ahimsa – It is Sanskrit for “non-violence and compassion towards all”

Guys, let me tell you, these tights are like nothing I have ever felt before!  I placed my order & these were delivered within 2 days.  And the moment I opened the packet I was in love.  They are so, so soft & you will have a difficult choice trying to decide which ones to add to your basket.  They are super comfy to work out with, & you can wear them with confidence as they don’t go see-through when you are bending over as many different tights do!

And as for Let’s Get Twisted, you can get your tickets here – it is happening THIS WEEKEND so don’t miss out.  I am super excited about this.  I may not be the most confident or the best at Yoga, but I can’t wait to try the classes that they have lined up & just meet some of the wonderful people that are going to be there.  Please come say hi if you see me.  I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my Saturday!

Unicorn Fitness Box

In case you haven’t realised, I am slightly obsessed with unicorns!  And with my sister owning the Metafit franchise, I am constantly on the lookout for new & exciting fitness things too.  So when I came across the Unicorn Fitness Box, it was like they had magically combined us together with our favourite things…

Your name: Nadine Ackermann
Business name: Unicorn Fitness Box
How did you choose this name: Who doesn’t love Unicorns, surprises and fitness stuff
What do you do: A contributor to the corporate machine by day, supplier of magical fitness stuff by night. And weekend.
What sort of things do you include in your boxes: Each month we include items from the fitness industry in the categories of apparel, equipment, nutrition, recovery and education. We have found awesome local startups that are dying for a platform to get their product out there in the hands of their target market. You will find something for everybody no matter what form of fitness you’re in to, weather you are a seasoned athlete or a newbie to fitness. Magical Fitness Stuff. Delivered.

thumbnail_DSC_3803
How did you start this business: The need for me arose when I kept seeing these awesome products available, but could never justify the spend on something I might only use once. So I got a couple of brands together that I liked and gave it a try on the ladies in my gym. The response I got was great, it was also a ton of fun to do. Our subscribers love the idea of getting things that they say they would never have thought of getting for themselves. At our gym we have one or two ladies that also have small gym equipment based start up and seeing them struggle to move stock and make sales was also a great assurance to me that this idea could be needed.
Social media handles: Facebook & Instagram
How can people place their order, & how much are the subscription boxes: Log on to our website and select from 1 of 3 magical subscriptions. 1 month, 4 month and a year. We start at R565.00 a month with shipping and delivery included. For this you get 4 to 7 items in each box, with a value of R700 to R1200.
If a company wants to get involved, how can they get hold of you: Drop us a mail on curation@unicornfitnessbox.co.za and we can get chatting! Every single item that goes into our box is carefully selected, defiantly tested and purchased and paid for. This allows us to up hold our brand as a premium and exclusive subscription with accountability to our subscribers from us and our suppliers.

Doesn’t this sound like such a great idea?  I know I absolutely love the sound of it & definitely want to try one out for myself – maybe it will even encourage me to get fitter & healthier!

Metafit

Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional, and mental states.

Carol Welch

I have never been hugely into fitness or exercise, and since getting my diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis my exercise has had to take a back seat just so my muscles can cope with normal everyday life.

My sister, aka the Ying to my Yang, is the complete opposite!  You could not get more different people if you tried – and we came from the same parents, same upbringing & everything else you could possible think about.  Perhaps this is why she is my best friend, & nearly always the first person I turn to for anything (besides husband!).  There is also 10 years between us, so you would think that that would cause issues, but when we are together my heart swells with joy & it makes me so happy.  I am so proud to be her sister.

Kate lived in the UK for a couple of years, & that was TOUGH.  She was far away from family, but whilst she was there she discovered her true passion – helping others through exercise & living a healthy lifestyle.  She qualified as a personal trainer, & then came across Metafit & her life literally changed (for the better).  She decided to buy the franchise for South Africa & bring it over to help expand what personal trainers are able to teach as well as improving the lives of so many.

Metafit-Title_jpg_932x300

When she moved back to SA, I decided to tag along to some of her classes where she was training Personal Trainers & I was blown away!  This is intense!  But everyone who took part in Kate’s classes just loved them & wanted more.  That’s when it really hit me how special this was, & what a great teacher she is.

Formed by a former Royal Marine Commando and an international gymnast in 2010, Metafit is the original group X HIIT workout. 30 minute, non choreographed, bodyweight only workouts that set the metabolism on fire. We have been creating true HIIT workouts for our coaches for over 10 years and weather you are teaching a Boot Camp, Studio class or a PT session, Metafit works! its tough, but its meant to be.

I asked her a few questions about what made this HIIT workout different to the other ones that she had been teaching, & why it had such an impact on her.

The Facebook page for Metafit SA can be found here & there is also a group for all qualified coaches in SA so you can constantly get advice from others, as well as Kate herself.

Kate travels around South Africa training coaches, & seeing how much everyone has enjoyed these classes has really inspired me!  I know that as soon as I am strong enough I will most definitely be taking a Metafit class.  Kate has such passion for this HIIT workout & it shows in every one of her classes, as well as when she is teaching others.
