Cakey by Davy

Lockdown really screwed a lot of us over!  So many people have lost their jobs, and just have no idea where to turn.  I know of families that are starving, and friends that have no idea when their next income will be received.

And then, a friend introduced me to Davy.  I gave him a call to find out more about this business that started during lockdown, and I KNOW that he is going to change the world one delicious cake at a time.

Davy lost his job at a well-known restaurant during lockdown where he had been a cleaner.  His new baby was only a few weeks old, and they had no idea how they were going to survive.  But Davy doesn’t give up!  He hustled, taught himself to bake by watching YouTube videos, and now is able to stay at home to look after their children while his wife is at work.  He then bakes from 5pm – 12am to ensure that his cakes are fresh for any orders that he has, and he has really found his creativity and passion.

Tell me about your business:  I bake delicious cakes!  I specialize in Vanilla, Carrot and Chocolate cakes, cupcakes and muffins.

How did you get into this business:  When Covid19 pandemic forced us into lock down I started teaching myself how to bake by following videos on YouTube. It was theory only because my oven stove was not yet connected. When we finally moved to level 4 of lockdown, an electrician connected my stove. I started doing muffins for my family and then moved to cakes. It was fun because I was teaching myself and I enjoyed it.

When did you start baking:  It was end of May when I started selling my muffins and cakes, and it was a huge relief for me because i was getting something for my family to eat. In June I officially started baking and I have never looked back. I have lovely friends who supports me. I can mention a few – Charlie K, Inge, JP, Luschka, Tania, in UK my friend Tendai in UK, –  all these people played a big role in starting this business.

How much are your cakes:  My cakes cost R150 medium and R250 for large.

How can people order from you:  Most of my customers order via Instagram and Facebook but some order through my friends.  You can whatsapp me on 084 430 7326 to order yours.

Where can people collect from:  I’m located at Linden, Johannesburg.

Why do you love baking so much:  I’m loving baking because I’m learning new things everyday.

How has this business changed your life:  I lost my job at Brian Lara as a cleaner. Now I can feed my family and pay bills.

Quote you live by:  In order to write about life first you must live it.

Anything else you want to add:  Thanks so much for supporting me. I’m still new in this industry but I’m loving each and every support I’m getting from all corners of this world. Stay safe one day we gonna conquer this Covid19. Peace, love and harmony.

Guys, please support this wonderful man.  Davy is so humble, so kind, and honestly just wants the absolute best for his family.  Order your next birthday/anniversary/just because cake from him in Linden; and tell your friends about how delicious they are.  I am going to be sponsoring a giveaway with him, so make sure you keep an eye on his social media for when this is happening.

And if there are any bakers who would be willing to take Davy under their wing to teach him more and help him to really achieve his dreams, please contact me or Davy directly.  The fact that he has managed to achieve all of this through just watching YouTube videos shows that he has a natural talent, and with a little coaching could be the next big thing!  He would also really appreciate donations of baking goods to help take his business to the next level – he was mixing everything by hand (37 cakes for Father’s Day were all beaten and mixed by him personally), and recently received a large mixer to help make this process easier and quicker.

It has been so lovely getting to know him better, and I know that you will all adore him too.

Dear Deer

During lockdown I received my very own satin pillowcase.  I had been wanting one for ages, and then finally I managed to get one – from a local business nogal!  I also got a Moyoko Unicorn Brush (with argan-infused tips) after reading so many positive reviews and realising that I need to start taking better care of myself.

Chelle from Dear Deer was so helpful, and my parcel arrived with my very own hand sanitiser and set of gloves – this will never go amiss during this time as I’m sure you can agree.  I have seen a difference in my skin and hair, and don’t wake up with such knotted curls any more.  In fact I often have to fight husband for it as he likes the feeling of the satin against his skin too – I think perhaps I should have ordered more than one!

Chelle has very graciously allowed me to interview her about Dear Deer, and I really appreciate her time, and her passion that she has poured into this,

Tell me a bit more about your business:   Years ago Justine came to my desk at work and asked if I could make her a satin pillow slip … I thought she was nuts but since that’s what I love most about her I happily made her one … then two … then her sister wanted, then some of her friends … soon I was making so many I thought “hey I could make a business out of this” … so I did!
At the time my mother was dying of cancer and it made me think about when my time came to pass thru the pearly gates what good had I done in my life to deserve my wings up in heaven so I decided Dear Deer would be an awesome way for me to raise funds for all the charities I hold very close to my heart, so for many years the only profits I took I donated to charity.

I will always be thankful to Justine not only for being one of my most loyal and inspiring Dear Deer darlings, but for the constant support always believing in me and my little business. Your kindness and the years of too much fun (and bubbles) and side splitting giggles mean the world to me.

How did you decide on the name for your business:  Wish I had a good story for this but I don’t lol

Where did the idea for this business come from:  I just loved the story Bambi when I was little and that scene from Cinderella when all the woodland animals were dressing her for the ball … that’s pretty much my logo inspiration 🙂

What are the different products that you stock:  Satin pillow slips & now face masks, and I’m now starting to stock a few of my other fav beauty brands 🙂

101709435_2990870557659756_2533028469726511104_o

I see you are also making beautiful face masks – tell me about these:   Polyester satin is known to be less absorbent than cotton (and many other fabrics).
Because of the quick-drying properties and smooth satin surface, it is also known to be antibacterial and hypoallergenic.
Daily washing is recommended. PLEASE also wash before 1st use.

There is a little pocket opening you can use to insert a surgical mask (or a dried wet/baby wipe).  Cut them to the shape of the mask and insert for added protection. Remove when you wash your mask every evening.

Elastic can be adjusted for better fit.

Dear Deer satin is also Vegan & Peta approved.

Please take note that the masks have not been medically approved.
After not being able to find a mask myself, I decided to make one (OK, a few) after doing a ton of internet research.
They’ve been made according to my high standards, which I feel complies with my own safety and wellbeing.
Hopefully this will reassure you!

I feel like wearing ‘something’ is better than having nothing at all,
even if it’s just to prevent us from sneezing or coughing on others.
It also prevents us from touching our face.

I encourage you all to STAY HOME, be responsible and most importantly, be kind and helpful to others.

Why did you decide on satin pillowcases & not silk:  Dear Deer is PETA approved!

We support beauty without cruelty 100%. We believe that all animals and insects are equal, and we would never exploit that in the name of vanity.

The process involved in making silk is an unethical practice. Silk worms are sensate and produce endorphins along with physical responses to pain. Along with that, in the name of beauty, satin is a much better alternative to silk as polyester doesn’t absorb moisture like natural fabrics do, therefore keeping your skin hydrated and looking great.

84451559_2720838194662995_8602435137264680960_o

Why do you recommend satin pillowcases:  Besides all the awesome beauty benefits it’s just nice getting into bed and feeling like an absolute princess 🙂

Being a polyester material, satin doesn’t absorb moisture the way natural fibres like cotton do. As we all know, one of the many reasons our skin can look tired, dry and lined is due to lack of hydration. Sleeping on satin minimises facial lines, wrinkles and puffiness.

Another plus? Satin won’t absorb your expensive night creams.

Sleeping on satin not only has great beauty benefits, but satin is also hypoallergenic and come recommended by plastic surgeons after cosmetic surgery. Doctors also suggest sleeping on satin for cancer patients during chemotherapy and radiotherapy, due to their skin becoming very sensitive.

Dear Deer pillow slips help your hair maintain it’s natural moisture and this helps prevent dry frizziness, split ends and breakage.

They also keep your hair looking shiny and help your blowouts last longer.

How can people order from you:  From our online store.

How has this lockdown affected your business:  It didn’t really most of my products are listed as essentials 🙂

104122012_3029913153755496_2294471301287906902_o

Why do you encourage people to support local:  I encourage woman to support each other more, share your learnings and inspire each other to well !
You will be surprised how much those you are helping will help you too.

Quote you live by:  Be kind, and success comes to those who put in the work !

Anything else you want to add:  So much lol but considering everything that is going on in the world right now, I would like to encourage woman to support each other, specially in business, there is more than enough room for us to all shine and be successful 🙂

Have you ever slept on a satin pillowcase?  And did you feel a difference?

If you haven’t yet, I would really recommend you purchasing one from this great business.  Believe me, you will thank me for it!

To sum it up, these are some of the benefits of using a satin pillowcase:

  • Maintains natural moisture balance in your hair & skin.
  • Prevents hair loss, split ends & damage.
  • Helps your blowouts last longer.
  • Prevents dry, frizzy & dull hair.
  • Keeps hair shiny.
  • Gentler on eyelashes, extensions & braids.
  • Minimizes facial wrinkles & puffiness.
  • Won’t absorb face creams and serums.
  • Soothing on the skin after facial treatments or procedures.
  • Anti-aging.
  • Hypoallergenic.
  • Recommended by doctors for chemo patients.
  • Great for preventing knotty “bed head” for babies & kids.

She has also added some stunning beauty products to her online store, so it really is a one stop shop!

Footy’s

During lockdown I was sent a whole bundle of Footy’s treats to try out.  I was so excited, as the lockdown diet has been real and I know that I have been piling on the weight.  Footy’s is sugar-free, banting-friendly and has all natural ingredients.  How good could it really taste right?

footys

I immediately opened one of the sachets and added it to my water bottle filled with water.  YUM!  Guys, these flavours are unreal and don’t leave an artificial aftertaste in your mouth.  I was hooked.  I dilute it slightly more than their recommended dosage, but I have always added more water to my cooldrinks.

And then I decided to give the Grape flavour a go with some sparkling water, and it tasted just like Fanta Grape, but not as sweet.  I asked husband to try some with his eyes closed and he was super impressed as he had no idea I had made this at home.

I was also excited to discover their free recipe book available online and we have tried the chocolate and strawberry cheesecake, as well as the frozen yoghurt.  The different flavours are Grape, Naartjie, Strawberry, Lemon & Lime, Passion Fruit, and Raspberry – my favourites are the Passion Fruit and Grape, with husband obsessed over the Strawberry one.

Guys, these fantastic products are available in ready-mixed juices, as well as a variety pack (individual sachets of the different flavours allow you to discover your favourite without having to buy a large container), as well as 170g and 450g jars.

I have shared mine with my co-workers, as well as with one of the guys who works on our property and is a diabetic – he said he absolutely loves it and has already gone to buy his second jar!

These are available from their online store, Dischem, Food Lover’s Market, Spar, Fresh Stop, Pick n Pay, as well as a few independent distributors.  They are a healthier alternative to so many cooldrinks currently available, and I love the versatility of them – with the colder weather I have been adding it to boiling water and enjoying being warmed from the inside too.  You could even add it to milk for a fruity milkshake, or some plan yoghurt to flavour it as you please.

Bean Stew

Guys, this lockdown has got all of us thinking about our finances, our future, and how to spend our free time.  I have been loving spending a little extra time in the kitchen, and trying out recipes that I don’t usually – or trying out new recipes that can ensure our food stretches a little further and lasts us for a few meals.

This bean stew is one of husbands favourites, and I added some bacon bits this time (yum yum!), although the original recipe is from my vegan friend so this would be perfect for Meat Free Monday.  You can also chuck in some Chick Peas to an alternate texture.  It’s quick, easy, and super delicious.

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons Oil (sunflower, canola or olive)
1 Onion (chopped)
2 Garlic Cloves (crushed)
2 chopped Chillies/Chilli Flakes (optional & according to taste)
2 heaped dessertspoons Tomato Puree or Paste
1 Stock Cube (veg or beef) dissolved in 250ml boiled water
2-3 tins of Beans (black or speckled) (drained)
Salt & Pepper to taste
2 teaspoons Sugar

anne-nygard-AEOX8IGBO0I-unsplash

Method:
1) Sauté onions in oil on medium heat, until softened.
2) Add garlic & chillies (if using) to onions & sauté for a few seconds.
3) Add tomato puree/paste to onions & garlic & allow to cook for +- a minute (remember to stir, to make sure the mix does not burn).
4) Pour in about a quarter of the stock & stir it in, to prevent the mixture from drying out.
5) After a minute, add the drained (but not rinsed) beans plus the rest of the stock & give it a stir.
6) Add the salt, pepper & sugar, then stir in.
7) Place the lid on the pot & allow to cook at a medium heat, until most of the liquid has reduced.

NB : Remember to keep an eye on the stew while it is cooking & stir frequently because beans will catch & burn very easily.

Serve with rice or mash & enjoy!!  It should produce 4 to 6 decent servings.

This is a staple in our house, and we have really been enjoying it during lockdown – you can buy nearly all the ingredients in the house and have them ready in the pantry for the next meal.

Enjoy!

Children’s Biscuits

Last night husband said he felt like something yummy, but we didn’t have anything available on hand.  I searched through our cupboards & found a few ingredients to make his favourite childhood treat – Children’s Biscuits aka Smartie Biscuits aka Butter Biscuits.  They are so easy & super delicious.  Although he wasn’t happy with the size of the first batch I made so the next few were much bigger – I think his memory is a bit skewed as to the comparison from when he was much smaller himself…

We initially pressed the Smarties into the biscuits, but then husband requested I add them to the dough & we then get a surprise as to whether there will be some chocolate in the cookie we’re eating.  You could even add chunks of chocolate bar, cocoa powder, chocolate drops, or anything yummy that you would like.  Hundreds & thousands also work a treat!

This recipe also allows you to fill your entire cookie jar, so you don’t need to bake on a daily basis – unless you can scoff them in one go!

Easy Microwave Fudge

If you are anything like me, this nationwide lockdown has made me eat my feelings.  I have found every excuse under the sun to bring out my recipe book and try something new – and majority of the time it has eased my sweet tooth.  There is not much available at the shops in terms of baking ingredients, so I boxed clever and made a staple that I could actually find the ingredients in my grocery cupboard.  PLUS you can make it in your microwave, and it is so quick and easy that you will find yourself reaching for this time and time again.  Just please be careful of the hot sugar – this can cause serious burns and I would hate for any of you to get injured.

Ingredients:
125g Butter
400g (500ml) Sugar
1 can Condensed Milk
5-10ml Salt
25ml Vanilla Essence
10ml White Vinegar

WhatsApp Image 2020-04-10 at 09.49.57

Method:
1. Line a pan with silicone paper or foil.
2. Spray with Spray & Cook.
3. Microwave the butter for 1 minute in a deep microwaveable dish at 100% power.
4. Add the sugar, condensed milk and salt (to taste).
5. Do not stir, then microwave for 1 minute on 100% power.
6. Stir well with a wooden spoon.
7. Microwave for 10 minutes, stirring every 3 minutes.
8. Add the vanilla essence and vinegar.
9. Stir with a wooden spoon until the mixture thickens.
10. Spoon into your pan, and smooth out.
11. Leave to cool slightly, and cut into squares before the fudge gets too hard.
12. Leave to cool completely and turn out from pan.
13. Break into blocks and enjoy!

This is honestly the easiest fudge recipe, and we have been making this since I was a small child.  I love that you can make it in the microwave as well so you don’t have to stand for ages stirring the mixture in the pot.  I add the salt to help break the extreme sweetness, but my mum has been known to add coffee or nuts too.  Let me know any additions that you add too – I am sure I will be making this a few more times over the coming weeks…
