Bright colours, glitter, and makeup – this sounds like my perfect day! And so when I came across Omiyo Beauty with their creative boxes, neon pigments, rhinestones, glitter, and all the tools that you need to apply these with precision; I was hooked. I have spent many hours scouring their website and deciding exactly what I would love to try – and the answer is EVERYTHING.
What is Omiyo Beauty: Omiyo Beauty provides products and tools for creatives. Our aim is to bring people back to their more creative childhood selves. From our packaging to our products: we want everyone to feel special & have freedom to create.
Have you always had a passion for makeup: I’ve always had a passion for art. I took art in high school and really loved mixed media because it had no boundaries. I viewed makeup as using a different medium and the canvas was my face.
Please tell me more about your creative boxes: Omiyo Beauty is about colouring outside the box. I love how our products can be used in different ways depending on how someone views makeup. The creative box is made to encourage creatives to experiment and try new products and colours outside of their comfort zone.
What makes Omiyo Beauty different: Its made by a creative for creatives. Omiyo Beauty is a one stop shop to stock up on creative makeup products – something I wish I had when I started doing creative makeup.
How can people purchase from you: All purchases are done through our website. If anyone has any questions they are welcome to message us on social media or email us OmiyoBeauty@gmail.com
What is one product that you think everyone should get: Our glitter singles are by far my favourite products. My favourite shade is ‘Lavender’. Glitter is very versatile and can be worn up with sophisticated makeup looks or worn down on minimal makeup days to add a little sparkle.
Quote you live by:
The process of trying to build a company is really the most difficult and yet the most beautiful process anyone can choose to go on. It forces you to grow in areas you wouldn’t need to otherwise. Balancing having a dream and what its going to take to make that dream happen is so important.
Don’t these all look absolutely gorgeous? And how convenient that you can get everything in one place – in fact the creative boxes would make a perfect gift for that make-up loving friend or family member; or even as a little self-spoil!
It has been such a treat getting to know Omiyo a little better, and seeing all their products available makes me want to add more colour to my life.
When I studied beauty at The Academy of Beauty Therapy, I also completed my international certification in makeup. I absolutely love spending time experimenting with new makeup looks, and getting to play with beautiful makeup! We were taught using Kryolan, and I immediately fell in love. I couldn’t believe the coverage that their foundation gave; how their colours were bold and vibrant; and most of all the highest quality of each and every product.
I was so excited when I saw that they opened a store in Fourways Mall, and I was their very first customer through their doors. I won a makeover with them, and was so impressed with the service I received as well as the passion of each of the staff members. I was reminded again just why I adore these products, and pop through to their store at every chance I get.
We have some exciting ideas in the pipeline, but I don’t want to give too much away just yet… For now, you can enjoy learning more about them, and make sure you give them a visit next time you are in the area.
Your name: Judi Rosenstrauch (Marketing Manager) and MC van der Merwe (Owner).
Tell me a bit more about Kryolan: At Kryolan, we make make-up. But not like anybody else. Because unlike everybody else, we actually make our make-up. As one of the first cosmetics brands in the world, we use our own formulas and recipes to manufacture our own products. We think of them. We create them. Formulate them and love them into existence. We’ve been doing this over 70 years. And we’re still doing it today. There is only one real professional make-up maker. There is only one Kryolan.
You can also see the whole Kryolan story on the website – it is actually quite interesting if you have some time…
Why did you choose to open a store in Fourways Mall: We have been working and selling Kryolan products for more than a decade and developed an absolute trust in the brand and its products. We decided to go all in and took over Kryolan City in Maponya mall. After that the rest was history and we knew we had to bring the brand, that we loved so much, to Fourways. And are we glad we did! We have met so many awesome people along the way and some very loyal customers.
What makes Kryolan such an amazing brand: There truly is no brand like Kryolan! It is one of the very few professional make-up brands that is able to live up to the expectation. Our brand is so diverse and truly caters for every skin tone, complexion, make-up look or whatever your need, we will have it. We have over 7 different foundation ranges that comes in every shape and colour to suit your exact need with cover that you could only dream about. To top it off, all our products from eye shadow to lip stain and foundation is animal cruelty free. We even have a BLUE MASTER vegan brush set!
What services do you offer at Kryolan: We offer everything from make-up consultations to make-up for events and personal make-up lessons. Whether it is your wedding day or you are just a guest at a wedding or perhaps you have a photoshoot with the family, we can help you look amazing! You can pop in at any time for a free foundation matching with no obligation to buy and we will help you find a product that is ideal for your skin tone and complexion.
Is Kroylan for everyone, or only professionals: Kryolan is for EVERYONE! Whether you are a make-up artist, working lady or simply a mommy who likes to look good and feel amazing you can absolutely come to us. Many moons ago it used to only be available to professional make-up artists, but now we are a professional make-up brand available to everyone without exception.
What are some of your favourite products: It will definitely depend on what the occasion… As a foundation, I personally adore the VITACOLOR range as it is ideal for my drier complexion and it has amazing coverage. I always go with the LIP STAIN as it is extremely long lasting and doesn’t dry your lips like some stains can sometimes do. Even if you have to wear a mask, your lip color won’t go any ware! Another amazing product that I can’t get enough of is the SHIMMERING EVENT FOUNDATION that works wonders when you want to add a bronzing effect to your look for those rosy cheeks. But I should probably stop now, because I’ve mentioned 3 products already and the list just goes on and on…
If people want to know more about your products, where can they visit: First prize will obviously be to visit the shop! We are at shop F60 in Fourways Mall in the upper mall opposite Mr. Price Home. You can also phone the store at 011 516 0631 or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Be sure to follow us on social media too. Also remember that you can find any product online even if you just want to double check on our prices, it’s all there.
What extra discounts do you offer for professional makeup artists: If you are a professional make-up artist you can apply online for your make-up pro card that entitles you to a 20% discount on all products.
If you had to recommend just 3 products for people to start off with, what would they be: Definitely a foundation with a setting powder as this keeps your foundation on for the whole day! Then I would recommend an eyeshadow pallet (either a 3 or 5 color pallet depending on your need) that you can use for eyeshadow, blusher and contouring if you are in to that…
Are your products cruelty-free: All our products are animal cruelty free! We love animal and our moto is, animals don’t wear make-up, humans do, so why test on animals!
Is there anything that you want people to know about Kryolan: Yes, we have an extremely wide range of products and we would love to have the opportunity to show them to you, so please visit our store! If you know nothing about make-up, let us know and we can schedule a personal make-up lesson for you and show you exactly how to do your own make-up.
Where exactly is your store located: We are at shop F60 in Fourways Mall in the upper mall opposite Mr. Price Home. If you struggle to find us either give us a call or ask the mall security for directions.
Quote you live by: Enjoy the little things in life for one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things – Disney’s UP
Anything else you want to add: At Kryolan we believe in people first, business later! We will never sell you a product simply to push sales, we will always look at your individual needs and then make recommendations for your specific needs.
I cannot tell you how much I love this product, and especially this branch. It is my happy place, and I recently spent some time with these wonderful people learning about their different products and feeling like a kid in a candy store. I discovered their holographic pigments, and would recommend these to everyone, along with their foundation and setting powder for sure. Their range of eyeshadows is like none I have ever seen before, and you can create your own palette with your favourite colours.
Thank you so much to Judi for your time and love, and to all the great staff at Kryolan Fourways Mall. I can’t wait to see you again, to continue to stock my makeup collection, and to just learn from each of you.
I have been LOVING experimenting with new makeup, and recently I saw a post from Marie on one of the Facebook groups I am part of, and I was instantly drawn to her charismatic personality as well as her gorgeous makeup that she has created. She has just launched a new eyeshadow palette, and it has given me all the feels – I can’t wait to get my hands on it (as well as everything else on her website!), and I am sure that you will feel the same when you see the beauty that is MlsBeauty!
Your name: Marie-Louise but I prefer Marie
Business name: Mlsbeauty (Marie-Louise’s Beauty lol), boring I know.
Tell me a little more about your business: I first started as a makeup artist about 7 years ago. I’ve always been inspired by American and British makeup artists and brands and always tried to import products from these countries. I saw the need to bring diversity in terms of makeup in SA and launched my cosmetics line 2 years ago.
How long have you been doing makeup for: About 7 years ago. I was looking for a simple eyebrow tutorial on YouTube and became hooked.
Why does makeup make you so happy: It’s a refuge for me. When I’m upset I grab a brush and just go with the flow. When things fall into place I’m suddenly in a good mood.
What pushed you to start your own makeup line: The need of diversity in the South African Beauty Market.
What is your personal favourite item from your range: Can I pick 2? Cause they are really good. The Black Magic Palette and the Matte Lipstick in Negra, it’s a warm chocolate brown, I mix it with different lipsticks from the range.
What have been your most popular items: The Matte lipsticks, so far. But there’s a growing interest for the Black Magic Palette. The Black Magic is pretty versatile in colours but is still a neutral palette. I didn’t want to create a palette full of brown shades only, we needed a palette that’s lively, magical but still wearable.
How much do you charge for makeup application: My makeup rates start from R550.
I see you do makeup lessons too – how can people book with you: People can contact me through emails, DM or WhatsApp. I’m working on a bookings section on my website.
How can people order items from you: I have all my items on my website, easy, fast and secure website.
What makes your makeup brand so different to others: Inclusivity in every sense of the word. I wanted to create a brand that caters to everyone and where everyone can identify themselves.
Quote you live by: Enhancing the Beauty that already exists. Because that’s the sole purpose of makeup.
Marie, thank you so much for allowing me to interview you! Your products are absolutely gorgeous, and so are you. I love that your products are inspired by Africa, for Africans.
Marie is also currently running a 15% discount on her Black Magic Palette when you use the code WOMEN, so it is under R250 for a really versatile, gorgeous eyeshadow palette. Please support this wonderful lady, and share her great products with all your friends.
I have been following the beautiful Megan for some time and am always completely blown away by the level of talent that she has. She creates looks that are incomparable to others, and always stretches her imagination and design abilities to the extreme.
I met her at Beauty Revolution earlier this year, and felt like such a fan girl when I greeted her with a hug. She was friendly and so sweet to me, so I knew this was someone I had to introduce to the rest of you.
Lockdown for me has meant many hours spent playing with makeup and experimenting with new looks – nothing like what this professional is capable of, but I am constantly inspired by her creations and spend hours looking at her social media.
What is one word you would use to describe yourself: I’m probably going to have to say passionate. I am a very passionate person in everything I do, think, say, and believe in.
How did you get into makeup: I have have always had a huge passion for art. Growing up my Grandfather was an artist and I always really admired his ability to paint beautiful things on a canvas. So the fascination with the artistic side of it was always there. But I only really got into makeup when I was around 14. I was a very insecure girl and I used to use makeup to try and make myself feel better about the way that I looked. Soon, I simply fell in love, and the rest was history. I realised that I could use makeup in the same way my Grandfather used his paint, to create something interesting and beautiful for people to look at.
How long have you been doing makeup for: I have been doing makeup for 7 years now.
Have you always been artistic: I have always been very in touch with my creative side. At school, art was my best subject! I grew up around art, and I truly believe that it’s embedded in my nature.
What is the style of makeup that you are most known for: I think that I am probably best known for my more creative makeup looks, although I’m not too sure!
What has been your favourite look that you have created: I think that my favourite look I’ve ever done has got to be my Mona Lisa makeup transformation. That was very challenging but it turned out really well in the end. My first NYX Face Awards look also has a very special place in my heart.
What inspires you for your makeup looks: Honestly, I’m inspired by something different everyday. However, I do get a lot of inspiration from editorial makeup looks that I find in magazines and online. I’m obsessed with anything avant-garde. I also tend to save a bunch of inspirational images, and then sometimes mash them together with a twist. Inspiration really does come from a different direction everyday.
Do you give makeup lessons: I most certainly do! Anyone is welcome to contact me and request a one-on-one makeup lesson. I have also occasionally hosted group makeup master-classes in the past, and I’ll probably do another one again in the near future.
How can people contact you to book a make-up session & where are you based: Anyone is welcome to send me an email at email@example.com, call/text me at +27 76 145 0619 or contact me through my website. My studio is based in Mooikloof, Pretoria East.
What are your 5 essential makeup products: That’s a really hard question! I have SO many products that I use everyday! If I had to narrow it down, I think I’d have to choose the J.One Red Jelly Pack as a primer, that stuff is amazing!!! I’m also a huge fan of the Catrice Made to Stay 24H Foundation. It lasts all day and doesn’t crack or move. The Benefit Brow Zings Palette in the shade 6 is my everyday brow saviour! I love a soft highlight with my Blushing Hearts: Goddess of Faith triple baked highlighter by I Heart Makeup. And of course, my go to mascara, #LashesOfTheDay Super Volume Mascara by Essence Cosmetics.
What is your favourite drugstore makeup brand: My personal favourite drugstore makeup brand has got to be either Maybelline, or Makeup Revolution. I also adore Essence. I love almost all of the Essence products that I try.
What is one makeup trend you think every woman needs to know: I think that one makeup trend every women should have in their arsenal is applying a clean, red-lip. Nothing says power and beauty quite like a bold red lip. My favourite red lip is definitely MAC Cosmetics Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick in the shade “Feels so Grand”. It’s a perfect primary red that looks good on literally everyone.
Quote you live by: I think that the quote I live by would actually have to be something my mother always told me as a kid: “Don’t think, just do.” And this had nothing to do with acting impulsively. She meant getting things that need to be done, done, without over thinking them. I apply this to every day of my life. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning with a mountain of work ahead of me, I tell myself, “don’t overthink it, just sit down and do it, you’ll thank yourself later”. Thinking too deeply about the task in front of you, makes the task seem far more daunting.
Can you see why I am so obsessed with everything Megan? I know that I am going to be booking a lesson with her as soon as lockdown is over, and I am definitely going to practice my application of a bold red lip – I am also a huge MAC fan but don’t have the one she mentions, so I have added this to my birthday wishlist.
Do you have any make-up looks that you want some help with? Or do you have any inspiration that you would like to see Megan recreate?
Tell me a bit more about what you do: Maria Cosmetics is a company that is focused on educating women on various topics. We saw that women are flocking to watch YouTube videos on Makeup and follow makeup accounts on Instagram. They know all about contouring and eyebrows, but they do not know what the HPV virus is or how to do a proper self-breast examination. We decided to breach that gap by creating a fun and glamorous makeup platform where women can come to for makeup tips, but also to learn about female health and various other topics regarding women.
Have you always wanted to create your own makeup range: Never. I never even wanted to be a makeup artist. After school I went to study Theatre & Film Acting for 3 years. Thereafter I took a gap year where I traveled, waitressed and au paired. When my gap year was over I still wasn’t ready to be an adult. I went on to study a 1 year Journalism course which I didn’t enjoy (I think it wasn’t creative enough for me). Nevertheless I finished it. I’ve always been good at makeup since my mother was a makeup artist. I basically grew up with a makeup brush in one hand and a bottle in the other. I started doing makeup for some extra money. Word got out that I was good and so my business started. What a journey right?
What makes your makeup different to everyone else: The actual makeup: Our lipsticks are wax based. A lot of other lipsticks have fats or oils in them. Fats and oils are what makes lipsticks “go off” quicker. The wax base in the lipstick results in the lipstick staying on for very long, leaves a glamorous matte finish, but it doesn’t dry out the lips.
We also have a range of highlighters called the Hero Highlight (designed to highlight the Hero in you) This is a dual use creamy highlighter that can be used on the high points of the face such as the cheekbones, brow bone or cupids bow or it can be used as an eye shadow. The formula is creamy enough that it sticks to where it is placed and doesn’t leave you with an all over shiny face (like a kid who has had too many spare ribs).
But on the more important side. Even though our products are of high quality and we have put loads of love and care into each one, it is more than just how it looks when you put it on. We want women to carry our lipsticks in their handbag like a weapon. We want them to put on their lipstick like their war paint. It’s not just a lipstick. This is your sword. And no, you are no longer waiting for that prince on a white horse. Because girl, you ARE the warrior on the white horse. And THAT’S what makes our products different.
Why do you encourage people to support local: Sjoh, this is a difficult topic. I can write a book. I feel like people that have never run their own business or started anything of their own, struggle to understand what goes on behind the scenes. It is an emotional rollercoaster. Your business is your child. And every time someone supports you, it’s like your child taking a step. Your child saying their first word. And so, every time someone supports local. They help your entrepreneurial child grow.
How can people order from you: They can shop online and we courier countrywide.
We also currently stock at 2 salons in Cape Town, Northern Suburbs:
Simply Wellness Centre – Verdi Blvd & Langeberg Road, Sonstraal Heights, Cape Town, 7550
Also keep an eye out on our social media pages for our pop up stores and exhibitions.
I know there is a special story behind why you started this – please tell me about this: I was 19 years old when my mother got diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She was only 49. I wasn’t too worried because “mother’s don’t get sick” and there was no doubt in my mind that she was going to beat this. She took everything in her stride and continued to be an amazing example for me. Later, she was really suffering from all the chemo she was receiving, but one thing she never stopped doing, was take pride in herself. She still continued to spray herself with her favourite perfume, she asked me to paint her nails in the hospital, she still wore makeup to her chemo treatments. She watched YouTube videos on how to exotically tie scarfs around your head and wore extravagant earrings with it calling herself “Esmeralda”. To me, she was even more beautiful than before. When I was 23, the cancer had spread to her brain and on the 22nd of August 2016 she sadly passed away. Of course I was devastated. I am an only child and my mother was my best friend. My whole life. I shared everything with her. I thought I was never going to recover from the pain. But from the pain, came something beautiful. I decided to never let her amazing legacy die. And so I started Maria Cosmetics. In the words from the song Vincent “This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you”
Quote you live by: Find what scares you and run towards it
Anything else you want to add: All our products are named after powerful women in history. If you visit our website, you might be able to recognise some of these phenomenal women. If not, well, maybe you will learn something.
Andrea, I know your mum is so so proud of you!
You have created an empire, & I know that your business is going to continue to rise. Thank you for being a change in the world & for encouraging us all to live our best life. You deserve to be the name on everyone’s lips (excuse the pun!), & I cannot wait to see how Maria Cosmetics will continue to grow.
Thank you for your time, your energy & simply for being you.
Having this extra time to recover from my transplant has allowed me to discover myself once more, as well as what I am really passionate about. And I realised how much I absolutely ADORE makeup & how much I miss doing my makeup, as well as others. I have been out of this realm for a little while, so I have been watching many YouTube clips to learn more & also get to stay on top of the latest trends.
Jeffree Star, James Charles, Nikkie Tutorials, & Jaclyn Hill are stunning international makeup artists & vloggers that are world-famous – & watching their videos you can see why. However, they often review products that aren’t even available here or are just impossible to afford! I had heard about Ryno previously & his stunning makeup, & I was excited to find him on YouTube.
I also follow him on Facebook & Instagram & every time I see something of his, I spend a good few minutes admiring his work. I have been so excited as he released his own eyeshadow palette last year, & I finally managed to get my hands on one of own last week!
The colours are absolutely gorgeous, with great pigment & no fall out under your eyes. I have been having such fun playing with them, & have even booked in for his Makeup Masterclass in June! When someone has dreams, follows them & allows others to feel so beautiful. He has an amazing gift & we are so lucky that he is sharing this with all of us.
My playing around with the palette for the first time
I am so grateful for his kindness, patience & dedication to the beauty industry. And I am so grateful that he took the time to answer all my questions!
What prompted your interest in makeup:
As a kid I used to watch my Mom’s 2+ hours daily beauty regimen which involved smokey eyes and combing out the clumps from her lashes using a needle. This transformation awed me and to this day my signature is smokey eyes. And yeah I comb out lashes (but with a comb made of needles). I also named one of my eyeshadows after her, a warm brown inspired by her hair colour and the shade is called “R” for Riëtte.
When did you start doing this professionally:
The first time I got paid to do makeup was in 2005. I didn’t have money for makeup college after school so I worked at my local Bobbi Brown counter. We often had their trainers from New York teaching us and I’d paint anyone’s face, regardless of their age, features, skin colour or whether they were going to buy something. I was there to rack up experiences and 8 faces a day was not unusual. It was an invaluable experience.
Why do you love what you do:
The power of transformation. Making someone see themselves in a way they did not think possible can help them imagine all kinds of possibilities for their life. I hope the people who experience my work will draw on this feeling of empowerment even when they aren’t wearing my makeup.
Tell me more about your masterclasses:
The Makeup by Ryno Makeup Masterclass is an opportunity for anyone at any skill level to learn how to be their own makeup artist. Anyone with a passion for beauty should know how to enhance their own features. It covers contouring and highlighting, how to shape your brows for a fresh look, how to do smokey eyes, finding the perfect shade of foundation for your skin, which shade of lipstick is your ultimate colour, how to apply false lashes and more. Every guest receives a goodie bag, can enjoy the food and drinks and I give away a a beauty hamper. I love meeting my followers in person and taking selfies with them.
What is one secret for makeup that every woman should know:
Stop focusing on what you perceive as your flaws and paint on the face you want. I explain this idea in detail at the class.
Tell me more about the process for creating your makeup palette & how you chose what colours to use:
I have a signature makeup style so my objective was to have a palette that contain all these eyeshadows. This way my followers – especially those who attend my private makeup lessons as well as my countrywide makeup masterclasses – can easily recreate my makeup looks on themselves using only one palette. The Freak Unique eyeshadow palette contains 16 velvety smooth eyeshadow shades in ultra pigmented, super blendable colours with hardly any fall-out. The shades range from warm neutrals to bolds, and mattes to shimmers allowing endless possible looks from natural to classic, on-trend to smokey. The Freak Unique eyeshadow palette retails for R390 and is available online
Have you faced any backlash or negativity & how did you overcome this:
There is the odd negative feedback, in particular because I am outspoken on topics like going vegan. I propagate a cruelty-free and plant-based diet to every person I meet. I am living my truth and this brings me peace of mind and happiness.
What quote do you live by:
I love great quotes and there are so many that I have journals all over the house so I can write them down. Quotes are really just little time capsules of wisdom that resonate with your own world view. I cant think of one now but if I had to distill my experience of life and what is most valuable and eternal it is truth and love.
Anything else you want to add: I have trained with Kim Kardashian’s personal make up artist, Mario Dedivanovic. He created the Kardashian look and defined the beauty look of today. So not only do I share my techniques with you but also Hollywood’s make up secrets and favourite products. I don’t believe in holding on to knowledge and am happy to answer any makeup questions at my masterclasses. You can find more info on these under the EVENTS section on my Facebook page.
Isn’t Ryno so lovely? I am SO excited to meet him & grow my skills from such a master – I feel like such a little fan & may just let out a squeal when I finally see Ryno. The transformations of the above ladies are just a few that are on his social media pages, & I honestly couldn’t tell you which are my favourite. One day when I am going to a fancy event I definitely want to have this artist making me look like a whole new person!
Don’t forget about his Makeup Masterclasses – he is currently travelling around SA & you don’t want to miss out on this opportunity. Hope to see you there!
As a typical girlie-girl I LOVE wearing make-up & being made to feel pretty. I don’t wear make-up every day (I often just work from home), but when I go out I like to put in some extra effort. And looking at social media influencers who are super talented & inspiring makes me want to try harder, experiment with new looks, & also support these beautiful ladies. GypsyBird Makeup is one of these influencers that constantly amazes me & her feed on Instagram is full of beautiful pics & awe-inspiring makeup that she does.
Her prices for makeup for events & so on are only R650, & with lashes are R750. With Rare Diamond Awards coming up soon I know who I will be contacting!
Your name: Charmaine Cooper Business name: GypsyBird Makeup
Tell us more about what you do: I am a self-taught makeup junkie, who’s recently joined a makeup academy because I would like to have the qualification as well. I do people’s makeup for special occasions & then I create crazy makeup looks on myself for peoples enjoyment.
How did you get into this: Makeup has always been part of my life, but I never though I would want to make a career of it, I decided last year in 2017 that I want to be a full time MUA. I don’t really know how I got into it, it’s just always been there so I just went with it. If that makes sense.
When did you become interested in make up: When I turned 4 and I got gifted a Tinkerbell makeup set, my grandmother let me paint pink eyebrows on her, I walked around with this little bag everywhere and no one was allowed to touch it, so I guess you can say I’ve always had an interest in makeup.
Jeannie Mai used to give little tutorials in the ad breaks on the style network- when it still existed. I would watch her do it and then go apply it to my eyes. I was always hungry to learn about makeup.
I became very interested in makeup when I realized the power it has, not only does it boost your confidence and enhance your features, but it can completely transform your face. I wanted to know how to do these things. I was makeup information hungry.
What did you do before this: I studied graphic design.
Where do you get your inspiration: My main form of inspiration is artworks and music. I would listen to a song and imagine in my head what makeup would I do for a music video, haha it’s so weird but it’s what I do.
Then also I look to other makeup artist, plouise makeup academy is one of my all time favs. And then of course our local girly, Kandy Kane.
What do you recommend for every woman’s make up box: Oh this is a hard one, I think there are so many amazing products and I’ve searched for the best of the best in my opinion so I’ll have to say
1. A good primer (Urban Decay optical illusion primer)
2. Foundation (LA girl HD pro coverage foundation)
3. Brow mascara (Maybelline brow precise fiber filler)
4. Mascara (Urban Decay trouble maker)
5. Skindinavia – you will thank me later.
6. And a killer nude lippie.
What is your favorite makeup brand: 100% Urban Decay Makeup Junkie
Any advice for other makeup artists: Don’t pay attention to anyone around you, you are in your own lane – focus on where you are going. And girl you are good enough!
What is your favourite makeup look: Super dramatic colorful makeup! Also fluffy brows with big lashes and a neutral lippie.
Social media handles:
How can people get hold of you: By emailing me on firstname.lastname@example.org or my social networks.
Quote you live by: Don’t be eye candy, be soul food.
Anything else you want to add: I think it’s extremely important that makeup artists realize that their worth isn’t determined by the amount of Instagram followers they have, or if a brand shows interest in them. Remember that you are doing this for yourself, and your approval counts way more than anybody else’s.
Just stay true to who you are and what you stand for! Remember you started this for a reason, don’t lose sight of your end goal.
Charmaine is based in Pretoria, so if you are looking for someone to help you with your next event, you should definitely give her a call. This girl has natural talent that is simply EXPLODING! Make sure you follow her on Instagram & FB. It will make your day seeing her posts.

Last week I turned 30, & it was a huge milestone for me. Never mind the fact that 30 officially means that I have joined the dark side, but it was also a hugely enlightening experience for me as I have finally completely accepted who I am.
For so long we are forced into boxes that society sets out, & all I ever wanted was to be accepted by “the cool kids”. Last week, whilst undergoing yet another treatment, I took a good hard look at my life & realised that I need to be happy within myself & stop trying to fit in with what others expect of me. I don’t need to dress a certain way to fit in, or be “normal” to be accepted.
I am a “hippie”, I enjoy comfort over fashion & I don’t mind being a little different – in fact I embrace it now! I will always be a little girl at heart, & love being able to do all the girlie things. Aren’t we lucky that as women we have so many beautiful things to choose from & reflect our individuality? Why do we try so hard to look like everyone else then?
Whilst searching for my perfect flowercrown for my party, I came across the most amazing page called Opgedollie (you can follow her on Instagram as well here). She custom makes flower crowns for kids & adults; blooming bellies; mermaid crowns; unicorn crowns & recently even made flower wreaths for dogs! Yes, I need to get one of these for my chihuahua, Lola…
I had spent days scouring the internet & Facebook, asking for recommendations & when I saw her page I stopped immediately. Lené answered my queries with enthusiasm & was so willing to help & I just knew I had to have one of her creations! Every girl wants to feel like a queen & these crowns do just that. I wanted to be a “fairy princess” on my birthday…
I sent her the colour scheme I was wanting & she sent me some images of what she had put together – which was way beyond what I even had in my mind. It was delivered safely within a week & I couldn’t wait to rip open the package & try on my handmade crown!
I will definitely be ordering more from her in the future – I will find any excuse to wear one & there are just so many that appeal to me that I think I need to start building up my own collection. They are each unique, special & I think every woman deserves one – & deserves to feel beautiful. I ended up in hospital on my birthday & rocked my crown in ICU; & it made everything so much better.
And this was at my “Coachella” themed party – the top was a gift from Odette Gomes herself & is something I will treasure forever!
Please support local – you won’t find the quality or love in any of the store bought flowercrowns (believe me, I looked!).
Opgedollie, you have got yourself a client for life & I can’t wait to order my next one (& for Lola!) for our family photoshoot.
I asked her a few questions to get to know her a bit better: Name: Lené (Nytjie) Heck Business Name: Opgedollie. Fun facts *I don’t go to the mall (ever)
* I am a sucker for art
* I am a mother of 2 (boy and girl) gorgeous kids.
*I get excited when people are passionate about something.
*I am a laid back kinda old soul. When someone skydives Ill be the one watching. Lol About Me: I started doing makeup in 2010 in Polokwane. I was working under my own name. I was also working part-time at my Dad’s Practice, Boabab Medical Orthotic and Prosthetic Services. I then became very busy over the years and decided to rebrand my business to Opgedollie in 2015. During the rebrand I was searching for someone to make me a flowercrown and no one could, so I did it myself, and I haven’t had a day off since then! I absolutely love flowercrowns. Just such an amazing way to stand out be bold and be seen. It boosts my confidence. And I hope that is what happens to my clients.
