Belani Beauty

Doing makeup is my happy place. It provides me with a chance to show my creativity, escape the stresses of life in 2020, and make myself feel a little more attractive – these #COVIDcurves have destroyed my self-confidence, but getting into my makeup takes me away to a different place.

I discovered these graphic liners through social media, and they have really changed the game when it comes to taking your makeup to the next level, as well as experimenting with new looks.

I reached out to this local business, and asked if I could please feature them on my blog – and their response was so positive and appreciative, that I knew this had to be my very next post!

Tell me a little bit more about your business: We started Belani Beauty because we just felt a little bit stuck in life. We are both commerce students who just wanted to have a creative outlet that was fun and fulfilling. We both stared doing makeup in our early teens and we may not be professionals but we are definitely enthusiasts who like to experiment and switch it up. We want Belani Beauty to represent just that, a brand that will take you out of your makeup comfort zone. We are definitely still a work in progress. We have so many ideas and we are trying to figure out what is next for us. We excited for what the future may hold and we are extremely grateful for all the support we have received in such a short span of time . It’s expected for people to be skeptical of a new business especially in this South African climate but the leap of faith our customers took from the beginning is why we are still up running and we can’t thank them enough for that.

Where did the idea to start this business come from: We used to save so many pictures of make up looks with graphic liner that would always pop up on our Instagram explore page. We really wanted try these colourful liners and we couldn’t find any beauty business that was selling them in South Africa so we decided why not bring them to SA. We’ve always been told that the key to a successful business is to identify a gap in the market and fill it well once you do. That’s what made us want to follow through with our business because we wanted to put this advice to the test.

Do you need a steady hand to apply these liners: Yes you do need a steady hand to apply the liners with the use of our ‘Detailed brush’ and ‘Ultra Thin Detailed Brush’, which can be found our website, your application will be easy and you’ll get the perfect sharp lines in no time.

Anything else you want to add: We have so many ideas and concepts for the business and we are currently thinking of a rebrand, we just hope everything goes as planned we don’t know what the future holds for our business holds but again we are so thankful to everybody who has supported and shopped and re-posted on their stories and tagged us in their pictures it’s just so amazing to go on our Instagram page and see all the love from our customers and our followers and we can’t wait for 2021.

Aren’t these just so divine? And don’t you want to get your hands on them?

I have been seeing so many stunning graphic eye looks on Pinterest and Instagram, and can’t wait to try these myself with some of Belani Beauty’s graphic liners. My only problem is that there are so many colours that I would like to purchase.

A special thank you to these gorgeous ladies for allowing me to interview them, and for helping to change the game in South African makeup!

Kryolan Fourways Mall

When I studied beauty at The Academy of Beauty Therapy, I also completed my international certification in makeup. I absolutely love spending time experimenting with new makeup looks, and getting to play with beautiful makeup! We were taught using Kryolan, and I immediately fell in love. I couldn’t believe the coverage that their foundation gave; how their colours were bold and vibrant; and most of all the highest quality of each and every product.

I was so excited when I saw that they opened a store in Fourways Mall, and I was their very first customer through their doors. I won a makeover with them, and was so impressed with the service I received as well as the passion of each of the staff members. I was reminded again just why I adore these products, and pop through to their store at every chance I get.

We have some exciting ideas in the pipeline, but I don’t want to give too much away just yet… For now, you can enjoy learning more about them, and make sure you give them a visit next time you are in the area.

Your name: Judi Rosenstrauch (Marketing Manager) and MC van der Merwe (Owner).

Business name: Kryolan Fourways Mall

Social media handles: Facebook, Instagram and Website.

Tell me a bit more about Kryolan: At Kryolan, we make make-up. But not like anybody else.
Because unlike everybody else, we actually make our make-up. As one of the first cosmetics brands in the world, we use our own formulas and recipes to manufacture our own products. We think of them. We create them. Formulate them and love them into existence. We’ve been doing this over 70 years. And we’re still doing it today.
There is only one real professional make-up maker. There is only one Kryolan.

You can also see the whole Kryolan story on the website – it is actually quite interesting if you have some time…

Why did you choose to open a store in Fourways Mall: We have been working and selling Kryolan products for more than a decade and developed an absolute trust in the brand and its products. We decided to go all in and took over Kryolan City in Maponya mall. After that the rest was history and we knew we had to bring the brand, that we loved so much, to Fourways. And are we glad we did! We have met so many awesome people along the way and some very loyal customers.

What makes Kryolan such an amazing brand: There truly is no brand like Kryolan! It is one of the very few professional make-up brands that is able to live up to the expectation. Our brand is so diverse and truly caters for every skin tone, complexion, make-up look or whatever your need, we will have it. We have over 7 different foundation ranges that comes in every shape and colour to suit your exact need with cover that you could only dream about. To top it off, all our products from eye shadow to lip stain and foundation is animal cruelty free. We even have a BLUE MASTER vegan brush set!

What services do you offer at Kryolan: We offer everything from make-up consultations to make-up for events and personal make-up lessons. Whether it is your wedding day or you are just a guest at a wedding or perhaps you have a photoshoot with the family, we can help you look amazing! You can pop in at any time for a free foundation matching with no obligation to buy and we will help you find a product that is ideal for your skin tone and complexion.

Is Kroylan for everyone, or only professionals: Kryolan is for EVERYONE! Whether you are a make-up artist, working lady or simply a mommy who likes to look good and feel amazing you can absolutely come to us. Many moons ago it used to only be available to professional make-up artists, but now we are a professional make-up brand available to everyone without exception.

What are some of your favourite products: It will definitely depend on what the occasion… As a foundation, I personally adore the VITACOLOR range as it is ideal for my drier complexion and it has amazing coverage. I always go with the LIP STAIN as it is extremely long lasting and doesn’t dry your lips like some stains can sometimes do. Even if you have to wear a mask, your lip color won’t go any ware! Another amazing product that I can’t get enough of is the SHIMMERING EVENT FOUNDATION that works wonders when you want to add a bronzing effect to your look for those rosy cheeks. But I should probably stop now, because I’ve mentioned 3 products already and the list just goes on and on…

Shepherd with DUAL FINISH Ideal for contouring and highlights as well as to increase the opacity of other foundations.
Adeline Chabane with EYE SHADOW VARIETY 18 COLORS ‘V1’ pallet is a soft pressed powder for dry application.
Phumi Nompumelelo Twala with LIP STAIN ‘Ambient’. This product is a matt, color-intense, long-lasting and smudge-proof lip fluid that you will absolutely adore!
Monica with Shimmering Event Foundation is a very light and gentle fluid foundation for appealing light effects and bronzing.

If people want to know more about your products, where can they visit: First prize will obviously be to visit the shop! We are at shop F60 in Fourways Mall in the upper mall opposite Mr. Price Home. You can also phone the store at 011 516 0631 or send an email to info@kryolanfourwaysmall.co.za. Be sure to follow us on social media too.
Also remember that you can find any product online even if you just want to double check on our prices, it’s all there.

What extra discounts do you offer for professional makeup artists: If you are a professional make-up artist you can apply online for your make-up pro card that entitles you to a 20% discount on all products.

If you had to recommend just 3 products for people to start off with, what would they be: Definitely a foundation with a setting powder as this keeps your foundation on for the whole day! Then I would recommend an eyeshadow pallet (either a 3 or 5 color pallet depending on your need) that you can use for eyeshadow, blusher and contouring if you are in to that…

Are your products cruelty-free: All our products are animal cruelty free! We love animal and our moto is, animals don’t wear make-up, humans do, so why test on animals!

Is there anything that you want people to know about Kryolan: Yes, we have an extremely wide range of products and we would love to have the opportunity to show them to you, so please visit our store! If you know nothing about make-up, let us know and we can schedule a personal make-up lesson for you and show you exactly how to do your own make-up.

Where exactly is your store located: We are at shop F60 in Fourways Mall in the upper mall opposite Mr. Price Home. If you struggle to find us either give us a call or ask the mall security for directions.

Quote you live by: Enjoy the little things in life for one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things – Disney’s UP

Anything else you want to add: At Kryolan we believe in people first, business later! We will never sell you a product simply to push sales, we will always look at your individual needs and then make recommendations for your specific needs.

I cannot tell you how much I love this product, and especially this branch. It is my happy place, and I recently spent some time with these wonderful people learning about their different products and feeling like a kid in a candy store. I discovered their holographic pigments, and would recommend these to everyone, along with their foundation and setting powder for sure. Their range of eyeshadows is like none I have ever seen before, and you can create your own palette with your favourite colours.

Thank you so much to Judi for your time and love, and to all the great staff at Kryolan Fourways Mall. I can’t wait to see you again, to continue to stock my makeup collection, and to just learn from each of you.

MlsBeauty

I have been LOVING experimenting with new makeup, and recently I saw a post from Marie on one of the Facebook groups I am part of, and I was instantly drawn to her charismatic personality as well as her gorgeous makeup that she has created.  She has just launched a new eyeshadow palette, and it has given me all the feels – I can’t wait to get my hands on it (as well as everything else on her website!), and I am sure that you will feel the same when you see the beauty that is MlsBeauty!

Your name: Marie-Louise but I prefer Marie

Business name: Mlsbeauty (Marie-Louise’s Beauty lol), boring I know.

Tell me a little more about your business: I first started as a makeup artist about 7 years ago. I’ve always been inspired by American and British makeup artists and brands and always tried to import products from these countries. I saw the need to bring diversity in terms of makeup in SA and launched my cosmetics line 2 years ago.

How long have you been doing makeup for: About 7 years ago. I was looking for a simple eyebrow tutorial on YouTube and became hooked.

Why does makeup make you so happy: It’s a refuge for me. When I’m upset I grab a brush and just go with the flow. When things fall into place I’m suddenly in a good mood.

What pushed you to start your own makeup line: The need of diversity in the South African Beauty Market.

What is your personal favourite item from your range: Can I pick 2? Cause they are really good. The Black Magic Palette and the Matte Lipstick in Negra, it’s a warm chocolate brown, I mix it with different lipsticks from the range.

109485031_3007906142590097_3890657857063042687_o

What have been your most popular items: The Matte lipsticks, so far. But there’s a growing interest for the Black Magic Palette. The Black Magic is pretty versatile in colours but is still a neutral palette. I didn’t want to create a palette full of brown shades only, we needed a palette that’s lively, magical but still wearable.

How much do you charge for makeup application:  My makeup rates start from R550.

I see you do makeup lessons too – how can people book with you: People can contact me through emails, DM or WhatsApp. I’m working on a bookings section on my website.

What makes your makeup brand so different to others: Inclusivity in every sense of the word. I wanted to create a brand that caters to everyone and where everyone can identify themselves.

Marie, thank you so much for allowing me to interview you!  Your products are absolutely gorgeous, and so are you.  I love that your products are inspired by Africa, for Africans.

Marie is also currently running a 15% discount on her Black Magic Palette when you use the code WOMEN, so it is under R250 for a really versatile, gorgeous eyeshadow palette.  Please support this wonderful lady, and share her great products with all your friends.

Kiki Beauty

Near the end of last year I got sent some products from Kiki Beauty to try out.  I had no idea what to expect – their social presence had caught my eye, & I was definitely interested in finding out more about them, but I hadn’t yet tried their actual products.

I was sent their Pink Velvet Hydration Cream/Mask; 2-in-1 Makeup Remover & Toner; Rose Wax Lip Balm; & samples of a few of their products to try.  They also included an Emerald Green Eyeliner Precision Pen from Bionic Babe.  Well, let me be completely honest with you…

I cannot fault them in the slightest!  In fact I have recommended them to many of my friends who have been looking for a new facial range.  My skin looks & feels softer & smoother, & removing my makeup is an absolute breeze.  I keep the lip balm in my handbag & it lasts for ages whilst hydrating & smoothing my lips.

I have been using them for over 2 months now, & the compliments I have been receiving have definitely proved that these products are working magic on my skin.  I love how the cream/mask is so hydrating without feeling thick & oily on my skin; & the makeup remover/toner is easy to use & doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight or dry.  AND I even managed a winged liner look with their precision pen which is nothing short of a miracle.

I reached out to Holly & asked if I could learn a bit more about the history of Kiki Beauty & Bionic Babe as I had to share this with all of you.  Read on for more…

Tell me a bit more about your business: Our business is a family run business which started with my mom, Maryke. She noticed that there was a gap in the South African market for quality, South African made, skincare and make-up preparation products, specifically a primer. I was still finishing my degree in Chemical Engineering when we started to come up with some ideas for products and packaging. We then approached one of the top South African formulators who formulated our ideas for us. We managed to launch 10 brand new products and the rest is history 🙂

How long have you been running for: We officially launched our brand in September 2016.

61199170_1147512902123439_4997630439616151552_n

What makes your products different to other brands: Our skincare products are formulated, designed and manufactured in South Africa. We do our own designs for our packaging and labels. We choose only the best natural ingredients to go into our products, specifically for South African skin.

72949291_1264147750459953_3536805126150815744_o

What is your personal favourite product: That is a tough one ;). I love all our products in a different way. The Face Primer and Rose Dew Setting Spray are my go to products. I can’t go a day without them, even if I am not wearing any make-up. They are so nourishing and gentle and just love the packaging. I also can’t go a day without using our Bionic Babe Palettes. Love the strong pigments and exciting colours.

What have been the most popular products with your clients: The Rose Dew Setting Spray is our most popular product with the Primer following close behind. Our Rose Wax Lip Balm is also very popular!

73225025_923118868058052_582588296245280768_o

If someone wants to try your products, what would you recommend they start with: If they are looking for make-up ready products I would recommend our Primer and Rose Setting Spray. If they are looking for skincare our Jelly Cleanser/ Radiance Powder Wash are great products to add radiance to the skin. Our toner is also an affordable product that really smooths and cleans the skin. Otherwise we love to hear from people to recommend specific products for their skin types.

I see you have 3 different ranges – tell me a bit more about them: Our Make-Up Ready Range is all make-up preparation products. This range is designed to nourish the skin while ensuring make-up looks great and lasts as long as possible.
Our Skincare Range has all our skincare products including cleansers, toner/make-up removers and moisturisers/masks.
Our Hand and Bodycare Range is just basic hand and body care products. We are hoping to add to these soon. We have just launched a body protection mist-aerosol sunscreen which is great 🙂
We also have a branch of Kiki that has colour cosmetics, called Bionic Babe. We have tried to create funky packaging and colours for something artistic and different.

Burst Brushes

When I attended Makeup by Ryno‘s Makeup Masterclass, I was introduced to Burst Brushes.  I loved being able to see & feel them for myself, as well as being able to see how amazingly they applied product to the face.  And I was completely astounded by the overall quality of them!

These makeup brushes are high quality, beautiful & pretty reasonable for what they are – to give you an idea, you can get brushes from a local pharmacy for much more.  These look high-class  & definitely make you feel like a pro.  I bought some of my own straight away, & am just waiting for the rest of them to be delivered – these babies sold out super quickly at the event due to how wonderful they are.

What makes your brushes different to other brands:  We aim to have the best quality at affordable prices. It is on par with the best professional brands out there. We do not endorse bad quality products. We strive to always give the best service possible. We have stockist options available to makeup studios and salons, and an offer income potential for professional makeup artists.

Are you cruelty-free:  A wide variety of our brushes are synthetic which translates to being cruelty fee and vegan.

How can people order from you:  We have a beautiful and user-friendly website where people can buy from. Delivery takes 2 – 4 working days. We have different payment options, EFT, PayFast and Zapper

Which specific brushes do you think every person should own:  That is a very difficult question as people buy according to their own needs and moods. For me personally the stipple foundation brush (FD 05) is a must, a small blusher brush like BL 06 that is very versatile in applying blush, highlight, to contour and blend. A nice soft fluffy brush like BB 01 or BB 05 will take you far. Then of course a brow brush is a must – so either EB 01 or EB 04. I have tutorials on the YouTube channel to show how to use specific brushes.

How should people take care of their makeup brushes:  There are a variety of ways to care for your brushes. The fastest way is to spray your brushes with the Quick Fix Brush Cleaner when your brushes gets dirty. For people that shares their brushes, it should be sprayed every time after the application.

Then there is the Brush Wash which is an eco-friendly and safe way to clean and disinfect your brushes. This should be used at least once a month whether you are sharing or not.

Last but not least we have a very mild shampoo that work great to cleans your eyeshadow and powder brushes. It is too mild too clean heavy foundation, you have to use the brush wash for that.

It will be best to have a look on our YouTube Channel for the videos:

Have you always had an interest in makeup: I am a professional makeup artist by trade. But I have a huge love for the tools of the industry. My makeup artistry career started 20 years ago when I won a makeup course, and I never looked back.

Any tips for budding makeup artists:  The industry is exciting, but not glamorous by any means. But having the freedom to work with different people and different locations, seeing your work in a magazine or on a billboard is priceless. It is hard work, long hours, mostly spent on your feet, but so rewarding! When you enjoy your work, you will always do your best.

Quote you live by:  Be part of something that triggers your imagination!

I am so so excited to continue collecting this range – the difference that high quality brushes makes to your makeup application is enormous!  Plus do you want to feel soft, glorious bristles against your skin; or have hard ones stabbing into your eyelid & have half of them falling out along your cheek?  It seems pretty simple when I put it like that doesn’t it?!

Let me know if you order some of these beauties for yourself…  I would love to know your thoughts.
