Msulwa Life

When I first discovered Msulwa Life, it was through their reusable cotton rounds. I had begun to truly be aware of the waste I was producing during my skincare, and was desperate to find an alternative. I didn’t want to use the regular cotton wool or cotton rounds for cleansing and toning my face, and immediately placed an order for their collection of reusable cotton rounds – and have honestly never looked back. And then I began following them, and was amazed by all that they had on offer – from skincare, to soaps, to scrubbies, and so much more. I reached out to Megan and asked if I could do a feature on her, as I really feel we should all be more aware of not only our waste, but also using products that are kind to our environment and our skin.

Tell me a bit more about your business: Msulwa Life is a South African online store that creates and sells unique eco-friendly and natural products. Msulwa is an isiZulu word that means Pure, Innocent and Clean in English. We loved these meanings as it perfectly represents our brand’s vision, together with being South African. The Pure reflects that our products are free from harmful chemicals, the Innocent reflects that we don’t use animal products and are cruelty free and the Clean reflects that our products are eco-friendly, protecting the environment in as many ways as possible.

What are 3 fun facts about you:
1) I never follow a recipe – I prefer experimenting in the kitchen!
2) I like to ride motorbikes and do adventurous activities
3) I’m always thinking of new and creative projects

What made you decide to start this business: The concept and dream of Msulwa Life has been on my mind for a few years. I qualified as a Biokineticist in 2014 and then headed over to the UK and Europe where I worked abroad for 5 years as a Carer and then as a 2nd Stewardess/ Personal Trainer on a Superyacht. This is where I was exposed to a large amount of unnecessary waste and at the same time saw new ways of being more of a conscious and environmentally aware person. Over the years working abroad, my appreciation and love for South Africa was cemented and I came to realise Africa is my remarkable home and where I decided to return! I came back in February 2020, where I began Msulwa Life, running this eco store online which launched in March 2020.09.

What makes your products so unique: Msulwa Life’s products are unique because they all strive to achieve all 3 of the Pure, Innocent and Clean aspects that represent our brand and Msulwa meaning. We believe that these are the 3 vital components that we all should strive to align in our lives in order to achieve an optimal human lifestyle that is in harmony with the earth.
We therefore create and source products that are Vegan, Plastic Free, Natural, Chemical Free, Organic, Zero Waste, Cruelty free and Sustainable.

What is your personal favourite product: The Natural Body Moisturizer with Geranium & Lavender together with the Natural Facial Moisturiser with Sea Buckthorn are my Favourite! They really are refreshing, nutritious and are amazing on the skin.

What have been your most popular items: The most popular product is the Reusable Facial Rounds – I have been really impressed by how many people have switched from disposable cotton rounds and are so much more eco-conscious! The rounds have often been chosen with the Konjac Sponges, Bamboo Toothbrushes, Tooth Treatment Paste, Organic Dental Floss and Msulwa Soaps!

Why do you wish people would make use of more eco-friendly items: I had learnt great appreciation for Health and the Environment after a lot of research of how important our food and product choices are to our bodies and the Earth. I discovered that a Plant Based diet has been seen to be the healthiest diet for humans. This also exposed me to the devastating impact of the animal agricultural industry on our food quality, the shocking animal brutality and that this industry is the biggest contributor to global warming and environmental destruction – it was a huge realisation on how unaware we all are of this industry. I wanted to create more environmental awareness to South Africans and provide products that easily help people transition into a more sustainable lifestyle. The earth is at a critical stage of its survival, and if everyone started to be active and take individual responsibility, we can make drastic improvements to the earth’s and our health!

How can people purchase from you:
• Visiting our online store is the easiest way to browse through our whole Msulwa Life’s product range.
• Enjoy reading the product descriptions and learning about how each product will benefit you and your eco-friendly lifestyle.
• Add your chosen items to your cart and then choose from many secure online payments options including EFT, credit/debit card, Payfast and Zapper.
• Once you have made your order, we will instantly receive it and then begin putting it all together for you.
• When your parcel is ready, you will be notified with your Courier’s tracking number via email. Easily follow your parcels journey all the way to your door which will take 2-4 days.
• We securely courier all over South Africa!

Enjoying what you do and having a desire for what you want to achieve, is really the foundation for success. I haven’t yet got close to my environmental and business goals, but I feel I am on the right track!
I knew that I would only reach my full potential and be the most effective in the world when I pursue my passions and utilise my skills in directions that I was truly interested in, and this is Msulwa Life.

Anything else you want to add: I qualified as a Biokineticist in 2014 and then headed over to the UK and Europe where I worked abroad for 5 years as a Carer and then as a 2nd Stewardess/ Personal Trainer on a Superyacht. This is where I was exposed to a large amount of unnecessary waste and at the same time saw new ways of being more of a conscious and an environmentally aware person.

I can’t wait to purchase more items from this stunning range, and also to know that I am doing all I can to live a better life, and protect our beautiful world.

Which of these are on your wishlist? I would definitely recommend the reusable cotton rounds for each and every person.

Thank you Megan for your time, your passion, but most of all for wanting to make a real difference and spread kindness everywhere. You are one in a million.

I love beautiful art.  I love pictures that make you think, pictures that you can spend hours looking at, and images that evoke emotions in you that you may not have been experiencing initially.  I love hand-drawn art, that you can see the skill and time put into it.  But most of all I love seeing people’s creativity coming through in their own special way.

I was drawn to Ilse through her yoga mats initially, and then I discovered there was so much more than “just” these mats.  I saw her posts about her art special she is currently running (believe me, you will want to check these out), and I got totally sucked into her website and the wide array of art that she offers.  I felt like I had walked through a portal into a whole new world, and that night I even dreamt about some of the pieces I had seen.  That’s when I knew I needed to reach out to Ilse and find out more about NovaWoolf, and get to know the creator.

Tell me a bit more about Nova Woolf:
NovaWoolf is the result of the creative and idealistic part of myself merging with the pragmatic, strategic part. It’s my sacred space to dream and to do, and to share it all with you. It started as only an Instagram page, where I could post my drawings and thoughts. This quickly grew into my own creative studio where I had been offering my design & illustrations services, selling my artwork, and I’ve participated in art exhibitions, locally and internationally. A lot has happened very quickly in the last couple of years and my business is constantly evolving. One day, I was looking for a fresh canvas for my artwork & posted a mockup of one of my paintings called “MoonMagic” onto a yoga mat! It made so much sense, since I practice yoga and my choices for yoga mats at the time were essentially limited to pink plastic or purple plastic!! I really wanted to create something magical that is kind to our bodies and to our planet – something I would actually use every day. The yoga mat mockup post received an overwhelming response, so it only made sense that I pursue this further & create my own conscious luxury yoga lifestyle brand. There are so many things in the pipeline for NovaWoolf Art and NovaWoolf Yoga & I’m beyond excited to see where this all goes!!

I see you have stunning yoga mats – please tell me about them:  NovaWoolf yoga mats (and soon-to-be released yoga props!!!) reflect an equal measure of scientific engineering, and thoughtfully curated art, to create a magical product that will become a treasured part of your yoga story. I believe this type of integration between body & mind, emotional value & physical performance, ecological consciousness & personal satisfaction are key to living a balanced, healthy, abundant life. I believe in quality over quantity, consciously curating your life and only owning items that add value to your life.
Our products are truly exceptional! Each NovaWoolf yoga mat is created from hand-painted designs, and all our mats are extra-large and extra thick to support all bodies and to cushion the joints. They are also biodegradable, vegan, and made from natural and recycled materials. They are free from PVC and toxins often found in other yoga mats and are created to be kind to your body and our precious planet.

Our yoga mats are specially engineered and meticulously tested to offer you only the best-quality and performance features, to ensure that you are fully supported during any style of yoga practice and in any environment.

We are very excited that we will soon be releasing an extended range of yoga props (cork blocks and straps) and you are the first to know!! 😀 And there will be loads more to come in the future! We have a very long list of dreams, to say the least.

Why are your products so different to others:
NovaWoolf is not just another lifestyle, or fitness brand. It is borne from the values characteristic of an atelier. Each product is created with the utmost care and conscious intention to add magic and beauty to the world. Each product is thoughtfully created, meticulously tested, refined, refined some more, and then lovingly handed over to the wonderful community we have come to love and authentically connect with. We do not simply aim to ‘sell’, but to share our story with the world. I still cannot get over how incredibly wonderful it is that something I painted one late night while processing my thoughts in the privacy of my home and listening to my favourite artists in the background, can end up on a product that someone else, someone anywhere on the planet, uses every day! This to me is extremely special and is one of the main motivations that lies behind everything I do, and now that NovaWoolf as a company does. The other primary motivation that keeps us centred on creating what we do, is that the world is in desperate need of more light, more beauty, more conscious creators, more kindness in every way possible. We are simply doing our part to create the world that we would like to live in : one where humans live in harmony with nature, practice compassion and non-violence to all creatures, where connection is more important than competition, and where holistic wellness and balance are prioritised.

What would you call the style of art that you do:
I suppose my visual style is a bit ambiguous. It has oscillated between contemporary minimalist illustrations with a monochromatic colour palette, vs. colourful, layered, more abstract expressive, ink and watercolour works. The overarching, or connecting, qualities of my work is usually expressive, loopy lines, and emotive subject matter that explores themes of healing, growth, transformation, and integration.

I suppose it’s worth mentioning that I studied design at Vega and went on to work as an art director, then strategist, designer / illustrator, stylist… you name it, I’ve done it! My design background has been hugely influential, since I was always comfortable working digitally. It’s only in the last couple of years that I’ve started returning to my traditional art supplies. I’ve fallen in love with painting again and as a result I will be very hesitant to return to digital illustrations in the future, as I have been doing previously. I also studied psychology and completed my MA in social & psychological research, so this theoretical background, combined with my own lived experience, is the reason behind my emotive subject matter.

Moving forward, my monochromatic illustrations are something of the past as I am focusing now more on colour, traditional media, saying my goodbyes to thinking in black and white, and embracing a much more intuitive, richer, more joyously complex, divinely connected, layered and joyful existence 🙂

What inspires you to create these:
My art is just an expression of whatever it is that is moving through me. I know that sounds extremely contrived, but it’s the only way I can authentically describe it. It used to be quite an intensely anxious, heavy experience, but it has recently become a much more enjoyable and light, yet much more complex, experience. So, to answer your question – it all comes from within myself, or through myself, I’m not even 100% sure… It’s an almost mystical process for me – I generally don’t plan ahead too much and I create intuitively and almost while in a bit of a trance. Generally, I set up my favourite music, create a comfy safe space, and just kind of see what needs to be expressed.

1(A4)1_A4
What Emotions do you want these art pieces to evoke in people:
I can’t say that I have an agenda or an expectation of the outcome, of how other people receive or perceive anything I do, to be honest. I create what I want /need to, I share it freely, and I’m super grateful that others seem to find value in it.

NovaWoolf-Maryke-Albertyn-Photography (89 of 110)

Have you always been creative:
Yeah, as a child I did a lot of competitive dancing, singing, poetry performances, I played piano, guitar for a little while as well, and just basically participated in any creative pursuits I could at school. I was never really much into sports, although I did play netball and hockey – not particularly well, but I did it hehe. Thank goodness I’ve found yoga, hiking, and more recently, rock climbing, as an adult! Then of course pursuing creative studies at Vega and working in the creative world has also been a huge part of my life. I’ve kind of come full circle after pursuing psychological research as well, as I now lecture research to creative students at Vega , where I started 🙂 I love that I have finally found a way to balance my creative side with my scientific, strategic side and that I’m able to finally satisfy all the different parts of myself – by being an artist /designer, researcher and lecturer, and business owner & director! I always knew a 9-5 was not going to do it for me, so I’ve had to create my own path and I’m finally starting to see the fruits of all the struggle, self-doubt, feelings of misdirection, and isolation. This is what I think conscious, intentional, creative living is all about.

Do you do custom pieces:
Absolutely! I’ve done many commissions for clients locally, and globally.

How can people order from you:
Either via my online store, or by getting in touch via email, or simply via social media messaging.

How has this lockdown affected your business:
Gosh – it’s been terrible, but then its been ok again. Naturally, not being able to trade at all for so many weeks in lockdown has had a major impact financially. However, the silver lining is that now, more than ever, South Africans are finally awakening to E-commerce, after quite a slow uptake in previous years. I’m extremely grateful that E-commerce has been given the green light again and that we are back in business!

Why do you encourage people to support local:
So many reasons! The preservation of local businesses support the preservation of communities and causes; it ensures that macro-scale policies support the communities most affected by them; it ensures the recycling of revenue back into the local economy instead of flighting profits from local pockets abroad to support external structures; it also supports more job creation and improved protection of individual livelihoods and wellbeing; and it supports sustainable living as local businesses are more invested in living in harmony with the resources in their immediate environment that they depend on.

Beyond all this – its true that when you purchase from a small local business, someone does a little happy dance! At NovaWoolf, that someone is me & I 1000% make sure those dances actually happen!

Quote you live by:
Oh gosh, there are SO many. If I absolutely had to choose one, it would be this:
“The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science.”
~Albert Einstein.

It always reminds me that magic happens when you can successfully balance creativity with strategy, planning with letting go, light with dark, yin with yang, art with science. The ancient teachings of yoga, and the science of contemporary psychology both echo this idea of integration and wholeness, rather than the way of individuation, separation and disconnection we have been immersed in in the modern world.

Isn’t Ilse an absolute treat?  And doesn’t her art speak to your very essence?  I am SO glad that I stumbled across more of her talent, and could definitely picture a whole wall in our house being adorned with different pieces from her.

And let’s take a moment to appreciate her yoga mats…  Imagine the talking point they would be?  And being able to practice yoga in your backyard and truly feel connected to the earth with a beautiful mat at your feet.  Now THAT would get me out and doing it more often.

Please continue to support local wherever possible.  And pop over to Ilse’s social media pages to see more of what she has been up to.

Umoya Foods

During my quest to health in 2019, I discovered this local business called “Umoya Foods”.  I saw how people I admire in the health industry were making use of their products, & I was drawn to their social media presence as well as their offerings.  I have realised that our foods these days are not providing the nutrients & goodness that our grandparents could get from simply eating naturally, & it is so important that we supplement.  I currently add protein powder & collagen daily, as well as micro-greens & -reds.

And taking into consideration that our bodies need a little bit more TLC than we are currently giving them, Umoya Foods can provide just that!

Tell me a bit more about your products:  Umoya Foods is a startup that creates nutritionally valuable products using African Ingredients. Our current focus is amaranth and we have two ranges based on the plant; nutrient boosts and instant amaranth cereals.

57441787_2430357507014484_6971835418765426688_o

Our nutrient boosts are based on amaranth leaf powder which is also known as wild african spinach and is part of the Morogo family. Amaranth leaf is incredibly rich in micronutrients including manganese, magnesium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and iron to name a few. What amaranth does is give you a wholefoods source of micronutrients and helps to increase bioavailability of other nutrients to your body so that you can absorb more nutrients from the foods you are already consuming. The four nutrient boost flavours can be added to smoothies, green juices, breakfast and your everyday meals.

Each mix does have a specific profile:
Vital Green: 100% amaranth leaf powder. Great for green juices and adding to pestos, over eggs or even in biscuits to get greens into otherwise green-less meals. A great mix to get your kick of micronutrients.
Chocolate Glorious: With cocoa, coconut, chia seeds and hemp seed protein powder this mix is a wonder at curbing those chocolate cravings while giving your body some great fats and proteins!
Feisty Baobab Spring: A zingy mix of baobab, ginger and amaranth, Feisty, as we fondly call it is a wonderful post workout mix. Baobab is high in fiber and vitamin C while ginger is a natural anti inflammatory. This mix not only supports your immune system but also replaces electrolytes you lose after working out and helps muscle recovery. A tablespoon blended with apple and avocado is super simple and one of my favourite mixes ever!
Turmeric Zen Shine: With Madagascar vanilla bean powder and ground almonds, this is a delicate tasting mix designed to soften the strong taste of turmeric that people aren’t always looking for. Turmeric is an amazing anti inflammatory and antioxidant, and on top of that is known to support brain function which is why it is our ‘recommended’ afternoon pick-me-up! This mix tastes divine in your morning oats or afternoon turmeric latte!

The instant amaranth cereals were launched on the 31st of August and have been thriving ever since! They are based on the amaranth grain which is in fact a seed making it gluten free, naturally high in protein and micronutrient dense. Amaranth grain is one of the ancient grains and is similar to quinoa. We have popped and roasted the grain to create the base of our two cereal flavours; Thrive Cacao and Thrive Baobab. We also added hemp seed powder to both. What we wanted to achieve is an instant cereal that is high quality, free from refined sugars and filled with wonderful interesting and nutritious ingredients!
Thrive Cacao: With raw cacao, raw beetroot, cranberries and cacao nibs we think of this as an antioxidant fix which is super textured and turns purple when you add a liquid! Raw cacao is known to be an upper that gives you a kick of mental energy while raw beetroot is known to have detoxing properties. There is no sweetener or sugar in this mix as all the sweetness comes from the cranberries and raw beetroot! Each bite is different with some being rich and chocolatey while others are tangy and sweet with some crunch making for a fun meal!
Thrive Baobab: A splendid blend of baobab, cinnamon and ground macadamia nuts! This is our high energy essential fatty acids food fix which will remind you of lemon cinnamon pancakes. Macadamia nuts are high in monounsaturated fatty acids which are often lacking in western diets and also known to help lower cholesterol. Baobab tastes like lemon sherbet and is specifically high in soluble fibre which acts as a prebiotic therefore feeding your gut microbes while cinnamon is known to help maintain blood sugar levels. The addition of a touch of xylitols gives some sweetness to the mix but if this is not enough then it should be noted that Thrive Baobab and honey is a heavenly combination!

What makes them unique in comparison to other products:  Our reason for existence is to support small scale farmers and we have structured ourselves to work directly with growers wherever we can. Our amaranth leaf is grown by a small scale farmer and solar dried on farm using a solar drier that we have designed. This allows the farmer sell to us at premium.

Our amaranth grain and raw beetroot powder is supplied by the Siyazisiza Trust who support over 800 small scale farmers across the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal.

As amaranth is climate appropriate, drought resistant and nutritious, it is valuable all the way from crop stability to food security. These are the long term goals that we are attempting to address.

Simply put, what makes us different is that our products are unique, as there are no other amaranth based products like ours on the market, and our focus on increasing small farmer income at scale drives all our actions.

Where possible we source our other ingredients locally too, although this will grow as we grow and our buying power increases.

75356875_2788860341164197_5929932775741194240_o

What is your personal favourite product:  My personal favourite has to be the Thrive Baobab. It is easy, comforting and loaded with micronutrients because of the baobab. And it is so convenient. I often forget about breakfast until 5 minutes before I leave the house, Baobab Thrive takes 30 seconds make and makes be feel like I’m taking care of myself.
My colleague on the other hand is a massive fan of our Feisty mix, she adds it to a smoothie of apple, cucumber and water. Clearly there’s something about that Baobab lemonyness that makes us happy.

53303529_2359992834050952_3607749142543073280_o

What are your most popular products from the public:
On the nutrient boost side it’s an easy tie between our Feisty Baobab Spring and Turmeric Zen Shine. People love how they contrast and often get both! If you have a lot going on then the zing from the ginger and baobab of Feisty is a winner. On the other hand subtler and calmer pick-me-up flavours of the Turmeric Zen are super easy to add to a whole lot of foods like curries, warm milk, oats etc. which I think appeals to people who like being able to use what they buy in different ways.

Why do you encourage people to follow a plant-based diet:  I would honestly have to say it depends on the person, the lifestyle and the intent. We are not nutritionists, just people who do a lot of research so prescribing anything is not our thing. What we do encourage people to do is emphasise wholefoods and minimal processing. There’s a lot that is lost by processing and we are aware of that which is what has guided our ingredient choices. Everybody needs treats and meals-on-the-go but getting in all the nutrients your body needs along with that is vital and a VARIETY of wholefoods are the way to get nutrients in easily!

55576738_2397648986952003_2348365174013952000_o

Where did the idea for this business come from:  My colleague was researching ways of processing for Amaranth leaf with small-scale farmers in mind. We started exploring how we could sell it to the food ingredient market but then we realised there was no commercial demand for it. So we decided to create a retail brand. These products would need education because although amaranth leaf is traditionally eaten it is known by a variety of other names (morogo, imfino, tepe etc.) and it was not widely commercially available. So we created a range of premium retail products that would bring us the most direct engagement with our market and allows us to start spreading the word. The result of that was the Nutrient Boost range.

Where can people purchase your products from:  We are stocked in many of the health food outlets in Johannesburg and you can see a list of our stockists on our website. We are also stocked in some health food outlets in Durban and aiming for the Cape Town market next year. What we say to people who discover us but can’t find our stock in their favourite store is that they should email us the name and we will get on it. They should also make a request to the store owners or managers for our products because that always gets the process moving along a lot quicker. We’re a small team so any retailer nudges are always appreciated!

We are also available on Takealot, search Umoya Foods.

Quote you live by:  “Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away”
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Anything else you want to add:  I think the last thing that we would like the world to know is that we are constantly striving for sustainability. Our inner packaging is compostable and while this is not yet biodegradable first prize, it is a step in the right direction while we wait for accessible biodegradable packaging to hit the SA market. Our outer tubes are recyclable and reusable and what we wanted to do was create packaging that could serve multiple purposes because of its elegance. Finally, through our business we always try to emphasise transparency. To offer this to customers we have a QR code on all of our packaging which can be scanned to see what we are about, who our suppliers are and why we exist.

I love these ease of use of these products, & that they are so proudly South African.  Plus they are actively making a difference in the lives of people wanting to get healthy, as well as all of those involved in the farming & production of Umoya Foods.

I am placing my order for these now, & know that I am going to chat to my local health shop to ask them to start stocking them in 2020!

Other than the absolutely delicious food (I am busy working my way through the menu & trying something new every time), the whole vibe is just so relaxed & stunning.  Plus they are pet-friendly, with water bowls & treats at the ready.  Could you ask for much more?

I absolutely love visiting this restaurant, & make every excuse to go there again – meetings, visits, or spoils with friends.  Just note they aren’t open on Mondays & don’t have a liquor license.  However, if you are choosing a healthier lifestyle then this makes perfect sense!

Yesterday I tried their new Vegan Frappuccino in Chai Spice, as well as their Bean & Quinoa Salad.  Their meals are huge so make sure you go there hungry, as when you lay your eyes on the delicious treats you will need to sample those too (the chocolate-filled doughnuts are out of this world).

Thank you Lorna for encouraging us all to live a better life & for providing the most delicious, healthy meals ever.

Timola

Recently I was lucky enough to win a prize from The Refillery which consisted of a bag filled with goodies from Timola.  I have been hunting for a skin care range that is natural & organic, gentle on my skin, & is friendly to the environment.  When I opened the brown paper bag of goodies, & saw that there was no plastic (!) but only glass bottles & labels stuck straight onto the soaps I was enthralled.  I immediately had to test them out.  The scent was gentle & natural, & didn’t scare me off with over-the-top fragrances.  There was no reaction & my skin felt moisturised & oh so happy!

I hadn’t heard of this amazing skincare brand before, & I feel like I have been missing out.  This is when I decided I had to reach out to them & I immediately felt like I was chatting to a friend. This business is filled with kindness, honesty & love.

Our Bulbine range of products uses the power of organic Bulbine Frutescens Leaf Juice to restore skin barrier function, reduce sensitisation and improve moisture retention. Our green clay & kaolin clay are valued for their highly absorbent properties and high content in minerals and are particularly beneficial as a therapeutic treatment for a variety of health concerns.

How did the idea for this range come from:  A few years ago one of our founding shareholders, a French gentleman with many years experience in the cosmetic industry was looking for an indigenous South African plant with exceptional skin care characteristics. His search lead him to our partners farm now organically certified and carbon neutral. Here he found your skin’s BF and the local knowledge of Bulbine Frutescens that soothe your skin birthed the name TIMOLA: “to soothe”.

Why do you encourage people to support local:  Local is lekker!

I once had a client asking me with all the Moringa products on the market, why must she buy our brand? My answer, because our partner cultivates the organic Bulbine and organic Moringa, it is easy for me to show you were our products come from. If you have a query, and being locally produced, we can trace it very easy.

She was convinced.

Cultivate Conscious Living

On my quest to live a more eco-friendly life, & make better choices wherever possible, I have been actively searching out businesses that encourage this kind of lifestyle.  I carry fabric shopping bags, use silicone straws & I am really trying not to buy anything wrapped or packed in single-use plastic.  I am reusing boxes that parcels are delivered in & am really trying to recycle wherever possible.

And then, I discovered a small business called Cultivate Conscious Living.  They are a beautiful, lovingly run business in KZN that really encourage better choices.

Tell me a bit more about what you do: I run a little business called Cultivate Conscious Living as my passion project as it feels my deep desire to want to help and make a difference in our world and home. We sell stainless steel straws, little bags to put them in, and the produce bags that have officially just launched. I am not only passionate about the environment, but also South Africa, and her people. One of the most rewarding things about CCL is that it has created some extra income for Nolufefe who sews all our little bags (and more importantly has been part of my family for years). Watching her become more skilled in sewing and business has been such a joy! She has dreams of becoming a fashion designer, so I am hoping that this is something I can help her with.

What gave you the idea to start this business: It was one of my crazy-wild-4am-magic-moments, or at least that is what I like to call them. It was the end of 2017, I had just packed up my life in the UK (I lived and studied there for 5 years) and was ready to move back to my homeland. I was reflecting and praying about the year ahead, ready to set my annual challenge, and decided 2018 was going to be the year of NO PLASTIC. As I decided that my heart sparked and the idea of CCL was birthed as I realized that South Africa at the time didn’t have much as awareness about plastic and needed it! As I got back, the timing was perfect as the #refusethestraw campaign kicked off… I couldn’t have planned it even if I tried!

56669516_320544305187208_8107803089727127552_n56260450_317814542126851_1755308895712051200_o53535850_306695823238723_12270184693760000_n

What are the different products you currently sell: I currently sell stainless steel straws and eco-produce bags.

What are some ideas that you have for people to live a more eco-friendly life: Practice. What we need is everyone attempting to live a more eco-life, trying to refuse plastic, live more consciously and put in more effort to fight the “convenience monster” that produces so much waste. If everyone was practicing this, it would make a far bigger impact than the few people who are doing it perfectly.

Why do you encourage people to support local: Because when we do, we support a mom who is trying to buy medicine for her daughter, or a dad who is trying to put food on the table. I come from a family of small business owners, entrepreneurs and I have felt the benefits (and the disappointments) of buying local! It might feel like it is a little more costly, but in fact, if you consider the bigger picture, it saves more than you could imagine! Supporting local means voting with your money against sweatshop type child slavery, the massive corporate environmental pollution, and the list goes on…

Do you deliver throughout South Africa: Yes yes yes!

Quote you live by: “Practice not perfection!”

Anything else you want to add: Thank you for doing what you do! I believe that if everyone shared the passion on their heart, and had the courage to keep going when giving up would be so much easier, the world would be a better place!

I absolutely adore these products, & the whole ethos that this business follows & encourages.  The natural colours & simplicity are also so attractive.  We should all be supporting this idea!

Nut Butter Mafia

Our family has always had a slight obsession with nut butters – on apples or bananas; in a smoothie; on toast with sugar/syrup/bacon; mixed together with ice cream & milo; or even just out the jar as a little pick me up (yes, by the spoonful!).  In fact there are probably at least 10 other ways that I would recommend eating it – but all this talk of food is making my tummy grumble.

Recently I scanning the ‘Gram (as one does when wasting time or needing to see whats going on), & I saw this page.  I immediately commented on the pic & Keagan reached out to me within 10 minutes.  I loved his passion for his trade, his business & all things nuts!

Keagan drove through to my house so we could chat about what he has on offer (there are 10 different nut butters that he currently makes – TEN!!!!) & I could sample these.  He has started this business all on his own & I love the fact that they don’t have preservatives or any added nonsense – I am really trying to eat food as natural as possible so my poor body doesn’t have to try process more crap than necessary.  Keagan has a true passion for his business, for people, & for wanting to bring the best product possible.  Here is a bit more about him & his business.

Your name:  Keagan St John Blaauw
Your business name:  Nut Butter Mafia
How did you get started:  One night about 3 months ago I was lying in bed thinking about what I spend a lot of my money on each month. And peanut butter was the first thing that came to mind! As I used to go through an 800gram jar with 2 to 3 days!
So the next morning I googled how you make peanut butter from home, I read over a couple recipes and then headed to the shops. I bought a cheap food processor, some peanut oil, and some peanuts. I then came home and started messing around with different flavours and ingredients. I started out just making it for personal use until a few of my friends had a taste and said it was really good!
With this small motivation I decided to start making to sell, I found a wholesale supplier of nuts, upgraded my food processor and started to look for markets to sell my Nut Butters. In the beginning I just had 2 flavours – Peanut Butter and Peanut & Raisin Butter (Which was an absolute hit from the start)
I then ordered an Industrial Peanut Butter Machine (Which arrived about a month ago) and started to put 100% of my energy into the business, and I started to try different nuts with different flavours. And I now have 10 different flavours of Nut Butters in stock!

What are the different flavours you have: I have 10 different flavours:
  • Peanut Butter
  • Peanut & Raisin Butter
  • Peanut & Cranberry Butter
  • Almond Butter
  • Almond & Cranberry Butter
  • Macadamia Butter
  • Macadamia & Cranberry Butter
  • Cashew Butter
  • Cashew & Cranberry Butter
  • Hazelnut ButterIMG_6230
Which is the most popular one so far: The Peanut & Raisin Butter has been a hit from the start, because it is very unique and different, giving you what tastes like an expensive Nut Butter at the same price as Peanut Butter. My new creation ‘Cashew & Cranberry Butter’ has been a hit with lots of people loving this flavour  … But to be honest they are all really yummy if I must so myself! lol

What is different about your nut butters to others: I feel that my nut butters are different because I only use the best ingredients, I do not cut corners to make extra profit. The honey I use is natural blue gum honey from a farmer who I met at one of the farmers markets I attend. If I add oils, I use Macadamia oil which is really tasty and adds a really delicious flavour! And I only use the best grade of nuts from my supplier.

I do not add any preservatives or stabilisers – All my nut butters are 100% natural, healthy, packed full of protein and fats for a guilt free treat. This was the reason behind all my butters, because I am a health freak and I have always wanted a guilt free treat without feeling guilty. And that’s what I have created with Nut Butter Mafia – giving my clients the ability to still enjoy some yummy flavours that are healthy & guilt free and curb those sweet tooth cravings!!

I also put a lot of effort, care, dedication and love into each jar! And no matter how big my company gets this will always be the principle I will work by! The customer always comes first and they deserve to have the best product possible.

What did you do before this: So I was originally an aircraft mechanic working on helicopters (I did this for about 2 years) until I had an accident at work which left me in ICU with a severe head injury. I felt like this was a sign that I needed to make changes in my life and I started to build a new life for myself one step at a time, and I literally became a new person. This was definitely a life changing event for me!
I then had an opportunity to start a social media company, so I resigned and went full in on the social media company, which I still run at the moment. I work on my social media clients in the mornings and then in the afternoons and weekends I work on Nut Butter Mafia.
I am also a manager at a nightclub in Illovo which I do on Saturday Nights to help fund Nut Butter Mafia!
Is there anything else you want to add for the public to know?  Hmmmmm…. My goal is to really take the market by storm , but I do know that this is not a quick process so every sale counts in Nut Butter Mafia moving forward and making progress.
So I am starting to do deliveries to homes and to offices. So if anyone is interested and can’t make a market that I do attend, I will gladly make deliveries  (you can see on my Facebook page which markets I am at for the weekend)
IMG_6226

This is definitely going to be a staple in our grocery cupboard going forward – currently we have Peanut & Raisin; Cashew & Cranberry; & Macadamia.  But it was tricky trying to choose which ones were my favourite so I know that I will have to order the other ones soon.  Keagan, I wish you all the very best with your business & I can’t wait to see what else you come up with.

Ok, now I’m off to snack on some Macadamia Butter on toast – too much talking about this yumminess & not enough eating it!
